Oscars 2021: Where can I watch the nominees online in the UK?
David Farnor | On 15, Mar 2021
The 2021 Oscar nominations have been announced and Netflix’s Mank and Searchlight’s Nomadland are leading the pack.
David Fincher’s film about Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz is up for 10 awards in total, including Best Directing, Best Picture and Best Actor and Actress for stars Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried. But the dominance of a black-and-white film about Hollywood disguises a strong year of diverse nominations – or at least a positive step in the right direction – with Emerald Fennell and Chloé Zhao becoming the sixth and seventh women to be nominated in the Directing category (for Promising Young Woman and Nomadland respectively), making this the first time more than one woman has been nominated for Directing in the same year (again, small but positive steps).
Zhao also becomes the first woman to receive four nominations in a single year with Nomadland, which has seven nods, including Best Picture and Frances McDormand for Best Actress.
Close behind them are Minari, Sound of Metal, Judas and the Black Messiah, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and The Father, all of which have six nominations each.
Competing for Best Director are also Another Round’s Thomas Vinterberg and Minari’s Lee Isaac Chung, while Best Picture is being contended by The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, Minari, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal and The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Another Round is also up for Best International Feature Film, alongside Better Days, The Man Who Sold His Skin, Quo Vadis, Aida? and Collective. The latter is also up for Best Documentary, alongside Crip Camp, The Mole Agent, My Octopus Teacher and Time.
Apple TV+ makes its Oscars debut with Cartoon Saloon’s Wolfwalkers, which is nominated for Best Animated Film alongside Onward, Over the Moon, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon and Soul.
Chadwick Boseman is posthumously nominated for Best Actor in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, along with Anthony Hopkins in The Father, Riz Ahmed in Sound of Metal, Gary Oldman in Mank, Steven Yeun in Minari. Up for Best Supporting Actor are Sacha Baron Cohen in The Trial of the Chicago 7, Daniel Kaluuya in Judas and the Black Messiah, Leslie Odom, Jr in One Night in Miami…, Paul Raci in Sound of Metal and Lakeith Stanfield in Judas and the Black Messiah.
Best Actress nominees include Viola Davis in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Andra Day in The United States vs Billie Holiday, Vanessa Kirby in Pieces of a Woman, Frances McDormand in Nomadland and Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman.
Best Supporting Actress nominees include Maria Bakalova in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, Glenn Close in Hillbilly Elegy, Olivia Colman in The Father, Amanda Seyfried in Mank and Yuh-Jung Youn in Minari.
The winners will be announced on Sunday 25th April. Read on for the full list of nominees, plus where you can stream them online – or when they will be released in the UK (where dates are available).
