What’s leaving Netflix UK in November / December 2019?
James R | On 23, Nov 2019
With the nights drawing in, it’s the perfect season to be camped out on your sofa in front of Netflix, but before you start loading up your next box set, don’t miss some gems slipping away into the long, dark evening of the digital void, as their rights expire and they depart the streaming service.
This is your last chance to stream the following on Netflix UK:
Days of Heaven – 23rd November
Terrence Malick’s 1978 classic follows a young steelworker who accidentally kills his boss at the turn of the century and goes on the run with his girlfriend and little sister.
Detroit – 26th November
Kathryn Bigelow’s depiction of the 1967 Detroit riots is brutal, violent viewing – sometimes too much so.
Baby Driver – 27th November
Edgar Wright’s car chase musical is a thrillingly original ride.R
It Comes at Night – 28th November
Trey Edward Shults’ sparse, suspenseful story of family survival is a chilling, gripping descent into paranoia.
The Hurt Locker – 1st December
Kathryn Bigelow’s film about a bomb disposal officer made a star of Jeremy Renner, but its real achievement was conveying the adrenaline rush of being in the middle of combat – a constant state of tension that leaves Renner’s soldier wanting more.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas – 1st December
Jim Carrey pulls out all the stops for this take on Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, which manages to be amusing as well as endearing – and boasts one heck of a make-up team.
City of God – 2nd December
Everyone’s heard of Fernando Meirelles’ thrilling tale of young boys growing up in the violent neighbour of Rio de Janeiro – and with good reason.
Spider-Man: Homecoming – 3rd December
Tom Holland slings webs like he was born to do it in this hugely entertaining superhero flick.
Despicable Me 3 – 6th December
Gru’s twin brother brings double trouble but about half the laughs in this animated sequel.
Arthur Christmas – 10th December
Aardman’s adorable charm is just about present in this computer-animated slice of seasonal entertainment, which sees Arthur struggling to save Christmas with a range of high-tech gadgets.
Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool – 11th December
Annette Bening and Jamie Bell shine in this romantic drama.
Rex – 12th December
Kate Mara is excellent in this moving, distinct war drama about a Marine and her dog.
Carol – 15th December
Gorgeous, uplifting and heartbreaking, Carol is an elegant portrait of desire and restraint.
Centurion – 15th December
Sacrificing character for action, Centurion is a British B-Movie with blockbusting tension.
Attack the Block – 15th December
Future sci-fi icons Jodie Whittaker and John Boyega team up to fight aliens invading a London tower block in this wonderfully funny and charmingly grounded thriller from Joe Cornish.
Adventureland – 15th December
Greg Mottola’s hugely likeable comedy-drama recreates the feel of the 1980s with wonderful wit and warmth – not to mention an aching appreciation for the growing pains of the graduates working over the summer in the titular, dead-end theme park. Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart are on top form.
Source Code – 15th December
If Hitchcock made science fiction, it would probably turn out something like this. Trains, romance, an unsuspecting male lead (Jake Gyllenhaal); it’s all delightfully North by Northwest, right up until the train goes kaboom. Eight minutes later, it happens again. And again. All the while, Captain Stevens tries to find and defuse the bomb – and woo his fellow passenger (Michelle Monaghan). Between the mainstream wit and time travel smarts, this is a cracking caper on a train.
Merlin – No Longer Being Removed
In a land of myth and a time of magic… This charming BBC fantasy series takes a Smallville-style look at the legends of King Arthur, and introduced the world to the brilliant Colin Morgan and Katie McGrath.
