June means the World Cup for many, but while the summer of sport may be kicking off in dramatic style, there’s still more than enough drama to enjoy in Sky’s box set collection alone. The catch? There’s not enough time to enjoy it all in, as gems such as Billions, Big Little Lies and Agent Carter are all given the red card this month.

Sky Cinema, meanwhile, is waving goodbye to a diverse array of movies, from Star Trek Beyond and Desierto to Love Actually.

Big Little Lies: Season 1 – 24th June

Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon star in HBO’s excellent miniseries about three mothers whose apparently perfect lives unravel to the point of murder. Written by David E. Kelley and directed by Dallas Buyers Club helmer Jean-Marc Vallée, this is a gripping showcase for four complex female characters.

Wolf Creek: Season 1 – 28th June

Based on the hit film series, murdering psychopath Mick Taylor (John Jarratt) returns to wreak havoc in Wolf Creek – except this time things are different: this time the victim fights back. Mick chooses a family on vacation in Northern Australia to terrorize and destroy, but that is merely the inciting incident to a much larger story.

Arrow: Season 6 – 30th June

Don’t miss your chance to catch up with the latest escapades of Oliver Queen, as he brings justice to the streets of Star City.

Urban Myths: Season 2 – 30th June

Sky’s original comedy anthology takes tall true tales and dramatises them with a wry sense of humour. Where else can you see Gemma Arterton as Marilyn Monroe, David Suchet as Salvador Dali or Noel Fielding as Alice Cooper?

Marvel’s Agent Carter: Season 1 and 2 – 2nd July

Catch up with one of Marvel’s best small-screen outings with this Captain American spin-off that sees Hayley Atwell reprise her role as Peggy Carter.

High Maintenance: Season 1 – 4th July

High Maintenance, the wonderful web series about a pot dealer on his rounds, gets six full half-hour episodes courtesy of HBO, continuing to portray a compelling tableau of human lives in Brooklyn.

Girls: Season 1 to 6 – 5th July

Lena Dunham’s funny, insightful drama follows the attempts of twenty-somethings Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna and Jessa to make sense of life. And eat lots of food.

Patrick Melrose: Season 1 – 10th July

Benedict Cumberbatch is on superb form in this moving funny, disturbing drama based on the semi-autobiographical novels by Edward St Aubyn, as we chart a lifetime of trauma, addiction and abuse in all its forms.

Barry: Season 1 – 13th July

Ever get tired of doing the same thing, day in, day out? Do you dream of giving it all up to start anew? If so, you’re in the same boat as Barry. But you might not want to be, given that he’s a hitman. Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live, Trainwreck) stars in this dark comedy as the man turning numb from the repetitive nature of whacking marks. But after he pursues one target into a theatre class in LA, Barry gets the acting bug. Can he really cut his criminal ties and pursue this exciting new opportunity? Or perhaps he can meet both halfway?

Billions: Season 1 – 14th July

Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti. That’s all you need to know about Showtime’s superb thriller, which is set in the ego-driven world of New York high finance. Lewis plays billionaire hedge fund kingpin Bobby Axe Axelrod, alongside Giamatti who plays Chuck Rhoades, the tenacious U.S attorney who tries to take him down. The gripping drama sparks to life as the two actors go head-to-head, setting up a thrilling game of cat and mouse.

Star Trek Beyond – 20th June

Funny, fast and fondly old-fashioned, Beyond feels more like an episode of Star Trek than a blockbuster – and it’s all the better for it.

The Shallows – 29th June

Jaume Collet-Serra’s movie about Blake Lively battling becoming a giant, angry shark’s next meal is a surprisingly effective survival horror.

Desierto – 30th June

After co-writing Gravity, Jonas Cuaron brings us back down to Earth with a loud bump with Desierto, a thriller film about Mexicans trying to survive being hunted down on the US border. A pro-imigration anti-western, it’s viscerally exciting and pulsatingly political.

Iona – 30th June

Ruth Negga is on fine form in this stark, yet nuanced drama about a girl’s homecoming on the titular island.

The Hustler – 30th June

Small-time pool hustler Eddie Felson (Paul Newman) ends up broke following a marathon game against the great Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason). Picked up by a cut-throat manager (Geroge C Scott), Eddie faces losing his soul… and his girlfriend (Piper Laurie). A thrilling examination of the self-destructive world of sportsmen with a stunning performance by Newman.

Love Actually – 3rd July

No, you’re crying while watching Richard Curtis’ romantic comedy for the 20th time.

Things to Come – 6th July

After a streak of films (Eden and Goodbye First Love) largely concerned with the notion of faded youth and lost loves, Things to Come sees French director Mia Hansen-Løve take a noticeable shift, as we see Isabelle Huppert play a philosophy teacher trying to assess where her life goes in the future, after the sudden departure of her husband of 25 years.

Pete’s Dragon (2016) – 4th July

Old wood carver Mr Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these are just stories until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley), a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. Charming family entertainment.
