The 2022 BAFTA nominations have been announced and Dune and The Power of the Dog are leading the back.

Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic has 11 nominations to its name, closely followed by Jane Campion’s Western, which has eight nominations – both ahead of Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast, with six nominations, Licorice Pizza, No Time to Die and West Side Story (five apiece).

The range of genres in that list alone is an indication of the variety and diversity underpinning this year’s nominees, with After Love, from debut director Aleem Khan, scoring four nominations, Rebecca Hall’s Passing scoring four nods, along with Will Smith-starring King Richard, while Drive My Car has raced its way to three nods, including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, the same number as Apple TV+ drama CODA.

Netflix is enjoying particular success this year, with more than 20 nominations, including The Power of the Dog and The Lost Daughter, as well as Don’t Look Up, The Hand of God, The Harder They Fall and The Mitchell vs the Machines. Amazon Studios’ Being the Ricardos has two nominations, with one for Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, while Sky Cinema’s Mass is nominated for Best Supporting Actress (Ann Dowd). MUBI’s Cow is up for Best Documentary (competing with Becoming Cousteau, Flee, The Rescue and Summer of Soul) and MUBI’s Petite Maman is up for Film Not in the English Language (competing against Drive My Car, The Hand of God, Parallel Mothers and The Worst Person in the World).

Apple Studios, though, is the breakout success story of the year, with its sci-fi drama Swan Song bagging a Leading Actor nod for Mahershala Ali and The Tragedy of Macbeth nominated for Cinematography, while CODA is up for Adapted Screenplay, Leading Actress and Supporting Actor.

The result is the most unpredictable set of BAFTA nominations in recent memory, after years of the academy’s awards following in the Oscars’ footsteps. In the performance categories, 19 of the 24 nominees are receiving their first BAFTA Film nomination and all of the performers in the Supporting Actor category are first time nominees. In the Director category, there is an equal split in the number of female and male directors.

Surprise snubs include Spencer, which is not nominated in any category, Olivia Colman not being nominated for The Lost Daughter, Nicole Kidman not getting the nod for Being the Ricardos, no nomination for Andrew Garfield in Tick, Tick… Boom! and no performance nods for The Tragedy of Macbeth.

The Best Director line-up comprises After Love, Drive My Car, Happening, Licorice Pizza, The Power of the Dog and Titane, while the Best Film category will be fought between Belfast, Don’t Look Up, Dune, Licorice Pizza and The Power of the Dog.
