Zac Efron is heading to Quibi for an adventure series called Killing Zac Efron.
The new streaming platform, which launches next April, specialises in short-form content, chopping up films and TV series into quick-to-digest chunks for on-the-move smartphone streaming.
Co-founded by former DreamWorks Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg, it has wasted no time in lining up a host of big names and high-profile titles ahead of its launch, including Guillermo del Toro, Antoine Fuqua, Sam Raimi and Steven Soderbergh, plus a horror series from Steven Spielberg called After Dark, which will only be available to watch at night.
Now, it’s added its most surprising project yet. Killing Zac Efron will see the High School Musical and Greatest Showman star go deep into a remote island jungle, going off the grid for three weeks with only basic gear and a partner to guide him.
“I tend to thrive under extreme circumstances and seek out opportunities that challenge me on every level,” Efron said in a statement. “I am excited to explore any uncharted territory and discover what unexpected adventure awaits!”
Efron will exec-produce the show, which is produced by his Ninjas Runnin’ Wild banner and Zero Point Zero. Jason Barrett, and Michael Simkin are also exec-producing for Ninjas Runnin’ Wild, alongside Zero’s Chris Collins and Lydia Tenaglia.
“We are excited to partner with Quibi on this new mobile experience to bring the audience on a wild, one-of-a-kind immersive journey into Zac’s world as he travels through remote locations in search of adventure,” added Tenaglia.
