Quibi UK: What’s available at launch?
James R | On 06, Apr 2020
Quibi has quietly dropped in the UK today, with a surprise launch that sees the mobile-only streaming platform available to Brits on the same day as it lands in the US.
The platform, founded by DreamWorks veteran Jeffrey Katzenberg, aims to differentiate itself from Netflix by focusing on short-form content, with “movies” divided into 7-to-10-minute chunks that can only be streamed on your mobile device. The idea of on-the-move streaming at a time when the country is locked down in their living rooms might seem strange, but Quibi is hoping that a combination of a 90-day free trial – it usually costs £7.99 a month – and a star-studded line-up of originals will help to win over subscribers.
Quibi’s content is divided into two categories: Scripted programmes, which are called “Movies in Chapters”, and “Daily Essentials”, which comprise lifestyle, entertainment or news videos that you might find on YouTube. At launch, four scripted shows are available, with 20 unscripted titles – including documentaries, reality series and other entertainment shows. Other “Daily Essentials” are a YouTube-esque potpourri that includes branded and unbranded offerings, such as news, weather, a round-up of late night talk show highlights from EW (“Last Night’s Late Night”), movie trailers from Fandango, “Sexology” by Shan Boodram and more.
