Andrew Garfield is entering the world of crime drama once more in Under the Banner of Heaven, and a new trailer gives us a first look at the series.
Garfield, who starred in Channel 4’s Red Riding trilogy just over a decade ago, will again take a role on the small screen. He will play Detective Pyre, an LDS elder who is committed to his Church and family but begins to question some of the Church’s teachings through his contact with a suspected murderer. The devout detective’s faith is tested by the brutal murder in question, which seems to be connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government.
Inspired by the true crime bestseller by Jon Krakauer, the series co-stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Brenda, a young faithful Mormon who is the victim of a brutal murder, plus Sam Worthington, Denise Gough, Wyatt Russell, Billy Howle, Gil Birmingham, Adelaide Clemens, Rory Culkin, Seth Numrich, Chloe Pirrie, Sandra Seacat and Christopher Heyerdahl.
The series is created by Dustin Lance Black (Milk, When We Rise), who will serve as an executive producer along with Brian Grazer (Genius, Friday Night Lights), Ron Howard (Genius, Arrested Development) and Anna Culp for Imagine Television, plus Jason Bateman (A Teacher, Arrested Development) and Michael Costigan (A Teacher, Stoker) of Aggregate Films, and David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water, Perfect Sense) and Gillian Berrie (Hell or High Water, Starred Up). Mackenzie will serve as director.
Produced by FX Productions, the true-crime thriller will debut on Hulu in the USA, which means that you can expect it to stream on Disney+ in the UK. Watch this space for a confirmed release date and further details. In the meantime, here’s the video:
