Disney developing new X-Files with Ryan Coogler

Disney is reportedly developing a new incarnation of The X-Files with none other than Ryan Coogler.
Coogler, who has helmed Black Panther and Creed, needs little introduction to viewers. The X-Files doesn’t either; the hit sci-fi show began back in 1993 and ran for more than 200 episodes in total, including nine original seasons, and two further seasons in 2016 and 2018, not to mention two films in 1998 and 2008.
Starring FBI agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson), the series investigated paranormal phenomena ranging from conspiracies and creatures to aliens and cover-ups. They both returned for the most recent revivals, along with creator Chris Carter.
Now, Bloomberg reports that Disney is developing a new spin on the franchise with Coogler producing, which suggests a fresh creative approach to the concept. The news follows Carter revealing that a new series might be on the way earlier this year, saying that he had spoken to Coogler about remounting the series with a “diverse cast”.
“He’s got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory,” Carter told CBC podcast On the Coast with Gloria Macarenko.
“We’re so steeped in conspiracies now. The X-Files dealt with a central conspiracy, but now the world is so full of conspiracies that I think that it would be a different show,” he added.
The project likely falls under the five-year exclusive deal that Coogler’s Proximity Media has with Disney TV.
