MUBI has snapped up the rights to Cannes Film Festival favourite Aftersun.
Debuting as part of the Critics Week, the film is the feature directorial debut of Charlotte Wells, who won the Short Film Special Jury Prize for Editing at Sundance in 2017. The film stars Normal People breakout Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio and follows Sophie, who reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father 20 years earlier. Memories real and imagined fill the gaps between miniDV footage as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn’t.
Now, hot on the heels of the film’s premiere, MUBI has announced that it has acquired the rights to distribute the film in the UK and Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Latin America, Austria, Turkey and India.
It is the third notable title that MUBI has picked up from the Croisette this year, including In Competition title Park Chan-wook’s Decision to Leave (acquired last month) and Directors’ Fortnight title The Five Devils, Léa Mysius’s debut starring Palme d’Or winner Adèle Exarchopoulos.
