Sacha Dhawan leads new cast additions to BBC One and Netflix’s Dracula

Inspired by Bram Stoker’s classic novel, the series is written by Sherlock creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. Commissioned by BBC One, Dracula will be produced by Hartswood Films and is a co-production between BBC One and Netflix.
Three feature length episodes will re-introduce the world to Dracula, the vampire who made evil sexy. In Transylvania in 1897, the blood-drinking Count is drawing his plans against Victorian London. And be warned: the dead travel fast.
Claes Bang stars as Dracula, with Joanna Scanlan (Hold The Sunset, No Offence) and John Heffernan (Collateral, The Crown) already attached as co-stars. Now, Sacha Dhawan (The Boy With The Top Knot, The Great) has joined the cast, alongside Jonathan Aris (Sherlock, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch), Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits, Adulting), Catherine Schell (Doctor Who, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service), Youssef Kerkour (Home, Jack Ryan), and Clive Russell (Game Of Thrones, The Terror). Filming on Dracula began earlier this year at Orava Castle in Slovakia, before moving to England where it continues at the world famous Bray Studios.

This wonderfully atmospheric and legendary studio gave birth to so many famous monsters and stars – most memorably Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. As we watch Transylvania once again rise on the sound stages of Bray, it’s amazing to be able to say that Count Dracula has finally come home”.
The show has also lined up its directing talent, with Episode 1 to be helmed by Jonny Campbell (Informer, Westworld) and Damon Thomas (Killing Eve, Penny Dreadful) and Paul McGuigan (Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, Sherlock) helming episodes 2 and 3 respectively.

Claes Bang to star in BBC One and Netflix’s Dracula
29th November 2018
Claes Bang will star in BBC One’s new Dracula series from Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.
Inspired by Bram Stoker’s classic novel, the co-production between BBC One and Netflix re-introduces the world to Dracula, “the vampire who made evil sexy”. In Transylvania in 1897, the blood-drinking Count is drawing his plans against Victorian London. And be warned: the dead travel fast.
Produced by Hartswood Films, the project was announced earlier this year and now, the BBC has found its Count in Danish actor Claes Bang. Trained at Denmark’s National Theatre School, he was a familiar face on stage and screen in Northern Europe before his breakout role as Christian in Ruben Östlund’s The Square, winner of the 2017 Cannes Palme d’Or. He will soon be seen in Season 5 of The Affair, and has recently appeared in The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Borgen, The Bridge and German series Sibel & Max.
“I am thrilled to be taking on the role of Dracula, especially when the script is in the hands of the incredible talents of Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and the team responsible for Sherlock,” says Bang. “I’m so excited that I get to dig in to this iconic and super-interesting character. Yes he’s evil, but there’s also so much more to him, he’s charismatic, intelligent, witty and sexy. I realise that there’s a lot to live up to with all the amazing people that have played him over the years, but I feel so privileged, to be taking on this incredible character.”
Hartswood and the writers say: “It was one of those moments – who else could it be than Claes! He has it all. Brilliant, gorgeous, charismatic, lethal. Tall, dark and gruesome all at once. Hell has a new boss.”
Dracula was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content and Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama. It is written and created by Moffat and Gatiss, who serve as executive producers alongside Sue Vertue for Hartswood Films, Ben Irving for BBC and Larry Tanz for Netflix.
The three-part series will premiere on BBC One in the UK and on Netflix outside of the UK, with production set to begin next year.
