As one of the smaller streaming platforms in the UK, STARZPLAY sometimes struggles when it comes to having a large enough library to compete with Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. 2021 has seen it stand out through the exclusive release of Stephen King’s The Stand and the second season of Pennyworth – and now, through the debut of new series Blindspotting, based on the film of the same name, plus the return of the crime drama Godfather of Harlem, starring Forest Whitaker.
Here’s what’s coming soon to STARZPLAY in June 2021:
The Royals: Season 1 to 4 – 1st June
Set in modern-day England, The Royals follows the lives of a fictional British Royal family who inhabit a world of opulence and regal tradition that caters to any and every desire, but one that also comes with a price tag of duty, destiny and intense public scrutiny. Prince Liam is thrust into the spotlight after the death of his older brother puts him next in line to the throne. When King Simon announces that he is considering abolishing the monarchy, the manipulative Queen Helena will do whatever it takes to remain in power.
Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too? – 1st June
When Terry Bobb (Perry) and his wife agree to meet three other couples for a tropical getaway, they have no clue how much emotional baggage is joining them. In no time, there’s lots of trouble in paradise.
Daddy Day Camp – 1st June
A pair of fathers decide to re-open a dilapidated summer day camp, and run into challenges – with the facilities and the kids – that result in energetic slapstick comedy!
Blindspotting: Season 1 – 13th June
Blindspotting picks up six months after the film and centres on Ashley (Jasmine Cephas Jones), who is nipping at the heels of a middle-class life in Oakland until Miles (Rafael Casal), her partner of 12 years and father of their son, is suddenly incarcerated, leaving her to navigate a chaotic and humorous existential crisis when she is forced to move in with Miles’ mother (Helen Hunt) and half-sister (Jaylen Barron). Episodes arrive weekly.
Godfather of Harlem: Season 2 – 20th June
It’s 1964 and Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker) is battling the New York Crime Families for control of the lucrative and murderous “French Connection,” the heroin pipeline that runs from Marseilles to New York Harbor. With a distribution syndicate that includes Black crime bosses from other major U.S. cities, Bumpy takes a cue from his friend Malcolm X’s (Nigél Thatch) message of Black economic nationalism. His ambitious plan will face challenges from not only the Italians but his wife Mayme (Ilfenesh Hadera), daughter Elise (Antoinette Crowe-Legacy), rival Adam Clayton Powell (Giancarlo Esposito), prosecutor Robert Morgenthau (Justin Bartha) and even Malcolm himself.
