Apple TV+ is stepping up its streaming game this year, with a slew of new and returning originals confirmed for spring and summer – catch up with the latest news here. June sees two of its big hitters return for sophomore outings, plus promising new series from Stephen King and Craig Gillespie.
Here’s what’s coming soon to Apple TV+ in June 2021:
Lisey’s Story – 4th June
Based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, and adapted by the author himself, Lisey’s Story is a deeply personal thriller that follows Lisey Landon (Academy Award winner Julianne Moore) two years after the death of her husband, famous novelist Scott Landon (Academy Award nominee Clive Owen). A series of unsettling events causes Lisey to face memories of her marriage to Scott that she has deliberately blocked out of her mind. Episodes 1 and 2 arrive at once, with the remaining 6 episodes released weekly.
Home Before Dark: Season 2 – 11th June
“Home Before Dark” is a dramatic mystery series inspired by the reporting of a young investigative journalist, Hilde Lysiak. Directed and executive produced by Jon M. Chu, the series follows a young girl named Hilde (played by Brooklynn Prince) who moves from the city of Brooklyn to the small lakeside town her father left behind. While there, her dogged pursuit of the truth leads her to unearth a cold case that everyone in town, including her own father, tried hard to bury. In Season 2, when a mysterious explosion hits a local farm, Hilde begins an investigation that will lead her to fight a powerful and influential corporation – with the health of her family and Erie Harbor in the balance. The 10 episodes arrive weekly.
Physical – 18th June
Set in the idyllic but fragile beach paradise of sunny 1980s San Diego, “Physical” is a half-hour dark comedy following Sheila Rubin, a quietly tortured, seemingly dutiful housewife supporting her smart but controversial husband’s bid for state assembly. But behind closed doors, Sheila has her own darkly funny take on life she rarely lets the world see. She’s also battling a complex set of personal demons relating to her self-image… that is, until she finds release through the unlikeliest source: the world of aerobics. Rose Byrne stars in this series from Annie Weisman, with Cruella and I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie at the helm. Episodes 1 to 3 arrive at once, with the remaining 7 episodes arriving weekly.
Central Park: Season 2 – 25th June
From creator, writer and executive producer Loren Bouchard, Josh Gad and Nora Smith, this sweet, surreal and showstopping animated musical comedy follows the Tillermans, a family who live in Central Park. Owen, the park manager, and Paige, his journalist wife, raise their kids Molly and Cole in the world’s most famous park, while fending off hotel heiress Bitsy Brandenham and her long-suffering assistant Helen, who would love nothing more than to turn the park into condos. Every step of the way, we are guided along by our friendly, fumbling, fiddler narrator, Birdie. The series voice cast includes Josh Gad, Leslie Odom Jr., Kathryn Hahn, Tituss Burgess, Daveed Diggs and Stanley Tucci, with Emmy Raver-Lampman replacing Kristen Bell in the role of Molly. Episodes 1 to 3 arrive at once, with the remaining episodes arriving weekly.
Fathom – 25th June
Directed and photographed by Drew Xanthopoulos (The Sensitives), Fathom follows Dr Ellen Garland and Dr. Michelle Fournet, two scientists focused on the study of humpback whale songs and social communication. As they embark on parallel research journeys on opposite sides of the world, they seek to better understand whale culture and communication. The documentary film uniquely reveals a deep commitment and reverence to the scientific process and the universal human need to seek answers about the world around us. From hypothesis to groundbreaking experiences in the field, “Fathom” showcases the passion, curiosity, collaboration, perseverance and work it takes for leading scientists to make scientific discoveries.
