What’s coming soon to MUBI UK in August 2023?
David Farnor | On 03, Aug 2023
MUBI brings its latest exclusive to our screens this month with Thomas Hardiman’s bold, camp and unique take on murder mystery, joined by the latest from the similarly idiosyncratic Quentin Dupieux, a Werner Herzog retrospective and celebrations of Robert De Niro, Jacques Rozier and Adèle Exarchopoulos.
In the meantime, it’s your last chance to stream Benedetta, House of Flying Daggers and Summer of 85.
What’s new, coming soon and leaving soon? Read on for your monthly MUBI Digest.
This month on MUBI
Rose Plays Julie – 3rd August
Ann Skelly and Aidan Gillen are brilliant in this tense, unsettling psychological drama.
Medusa Deluxe – 4th August
After a stylist is found dead at a hairdressing competition, the remaining competitors try to uncover the killer over the course of an evening, in this vivacious and absurdly comic ensemble drama. Rivalry and mistrust build as the remaining group of determined contestants suspect that someone may be trying to rig the competition, by gruesomely picking off its entrants. Hardiman’s extravagant whodunnit features stunning cinematography from Academy Award nominee Robbie Ryan (The Favourite), an electronic score by Koreless and dazzling hair designs by renowned stylist Eugene Souleiman.
Coriolanus – 5th August
Ralph Fiennes joins the list of actors who have directed themselves in a Shakespeare film with this blistering take on Shakespeare’s oft-overlooked play.
Once Upon a Time in America – 6th August
The final film by Sergio Leone finds the maestro audaciously and ambitiously going beyond his Spaghetti Western roots for a sprawling, multi-decade New York crime epic. Robert De Niro leads a production at once resplendent and gritty—a familiar setting given operatic majesty and force by Leone. De Niro. James Woods. Leone. What more do you need?
Incredible But True – 11th August
Incredible But True (2022), sees Alain and Marie, a middle-aged couple, move to the quiet suburb of their dreams. But the real estate agent warns them that what they find in the basement may well change their lives forever.
