“Oh my God, it’s me!” That’s the sound of Meryl Streep joining Only Murders in the Building, and a new trailer gives us a first look at her in suitably self-aware action in Season 3.
From the minds of Steve Martin, Dan Fogelman and John Hoffman, the murder-mystery comedy follows three strangers, Charles, Oliver and Mabel (Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez), who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio employ their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth. As they record a podcast of their own to document the case, they unravel the complex secrets of the building that stretch back years.
Season 3 will see Paul Rudd play a Broadway actor called Ben Glenroy – who is murdered after appearing in a Broadway play opposite Charles and directed by Oliver. Also joining them will be Meryl Streep, who we now know will be playing another member of the troupe in Oliver’s play.
You can see them all together later this year, when Season 3 premieres on Disney+ in the UK at a yet to be confirmed date.
Meryl Streep joins Only Murders in the Building Season 3
21st January 2023
Meryl Streep is the latest star name to join the cast of Only Murders in the Building for Season 3.
Season 2 concluded with the unveiling of its new star addition for Season 3, with Paul Rudd popping up in the finale as a Broadway actor called Ben Glenroy – who is murdered after appearing in a Broadway play opposite Charles and directed by Oliver. Now, Selena Gomez has revealed on Instagram that another big name is joining the cast: none other than Out of Africa, Mamma Mia, Devil Wears Prada and Big Little Lies star Meryl Streep.
It’s not yet known whether Streep will be a guest appearance, like Amy Schumer or Sting in the first two seasons, or a recurring role more akin to Tina Fey’s rival podcaster. Either way, it shows the growing clout of the star-studded comedy thriller – and suggests that a fourth season renewal wouldn’t be a huge surprise.
Paul Rudd joins Only Murders in the Building for Season 3
25th August 2022
Paul Rudd has joined the cast of Only Murders in the Building for its third season.
From the minds of Steve Martin, Dan Fogelman and John Hoffman, the murder-mystery comedy follows three strangers (Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez) who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio employ their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth. As they record a podcast of their own to document the case, they unravel the complex secrets of the building that stretch back years.
“This witty whodunnit still crackles with suspense, heart and self-aware humour,” we wrote in our review or Season 2, which premiered in June.
A third season was promptly greenlit – and now, just as it finale aired this week, a major casting addition has been unveiled for that third chapter.
Paul Rudd – who previously starred alongside Gomez in Netflix film The Fundamentals of Caring – surprised viewers by appearing in the Season 2 finale as a Broadway actor called Ben Glenroy. Now, Hulu has confirmed that Rudd will reprise the role in Season 3, although it is unknown whether it will be a regular, recurring or guest role.
“Paul Rudd, after making an auspicious entrance into the world of our show at the end of Season 2 as Ben Glenroy, is someone we clearly want to know more about and see in our upcoming Season 3 — as he is a clear source of many upcoming questions and, as ever with our show, many twists yet to come!” series co-creator John Hoffman told Variety.
Only Murders in the Building renewed for Season 3
11th July 2022
Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for a third season.
The show was a hit with a second run promptly greenlit. That debuted earlier this summer, with Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) reteaming as they race to unmask the killer of Arconia Board President Bunny Folger. However, three (unfortunate) complications ensue – the trio is publicly implicated in Bunny’s homicide, they are now the subjects of a competing podcast, and they have to deal with a bunch of New York neighbours who all think they committed murder.
Now, within weeks of Season 2’s premiere, Hulu has ordered a third season.
“Only Murders in the Building is the true crown jewel of our slate,” said Craig Erwich, President, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment, in a statement. “Its appeal across generations, the intersection of humor and heart, and its truly original approach are a hallmark of and testament to Dan, John, Steve, Marty and Selena’s work. We are grateful to be able to continue telling the stories of Charles, Oliver and Mabel to viewers that have consistently shown us they crave more of this story.”
New episodes of Season 2 continue to arrive on Tuesdays on Disney+ UK.
