Sky and NOW are ushering in an out-of-the-ordinary August this month, with new horror series Possession and sci-fi comedy Warren’s Vortex. They’re joined by the Curtis Jackson’s hard-hitting drama Fightland and a string of documentaries. (Reminder: Sky includes other new HBO Max titles in its Sky Ultimate TV subscription – and, for NOW’s streaming customers, HBO Max Basic with Ads will also be included in NOW Entertainment memberships at no extra cost.)

Barrow: The Truth Behind the Groom (Sky Documentaries, 9pm) – 2nd August

When Ellie Williams’ allegations of grooming went viral, they tore the town of Barrow apart and triggered national outrage. Police quickly denied there was a grooming gang and Ellie was sentenced to eight and a half years in jail. But was there truth beneath the lies? And did the focus on proving one young woman a liar lead to denial of a wider grooming problem? Produced by Sandpaper Films (The Betrayed Girls, A Deadly American Marriage) this three-part series reframes the Ellie Williams case, moving beyond a single question of truth or lies to expose a far wider and more troubling story.

The Salisbury Poisonings: A Spy Next Door (Sky Documentaries, 9pm) – 4th August

The Salisbury Poisonings: A Spy Next Door traces the extraordinary chain of events set in motion when former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned in Salisbury, England. Through firsthand testimony from senior intelligence officials, counterterrorism leaders, journalists and victims whose lives were forever changed, the film uncovers how authorities raced to identify the perpetrators, contain a deadly chemical weapon and respond to one of the most brazen acts of state-sponsored aggression on British soil.

Voices of the Valleys (Sky Arts, 9pm) – 5th August

Voices of the Valleys follows three Male Voice Choirs from across Wales and their charismatic conductors as they each prepare for a key event in their choral calendar, from challenging competitions to a performance in front of over 70,000 people. Follow the passionate choristers, from a twenty-four-year-old soloist yet to reach his full potential to one of Wales’s more experienced and celebrated tenors, and explore the pride and dedication involved in keeping this rich tradition alive and thriving. Possession (Sky Atlantic, 9pm) – 6th August

Claudia (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), an ambitious young bi‐racial lawyer, travels to Jamaica to challenge an inheritance claim made by a local man, Cudjoe East (Sheldon Shepherd), against Oliver Connaught (Jonny Lee Miller), a wealthy white aristocrat. But the case takes an unsettling turn when Claudia discovers that the disputed estate is the very place that has haunted her nightmares: Hope Hill, the Connaught family’s former plantation. As Claudia and Oliver dig deeper, they uncover a disturbing link between the plantation’s brutal past and the injustices still shaping the present. Possession is a gripping supernatural thriller that blends eerie mystery with the vibrant energy of Jamaica, following one woman’s journey into long-buried secrets, identity and the past’s enduring hold on the present. Warren’s Vortex (Sky Comedy, 9pm) – 10th August

From the team behind Wellington Paranormal comes a new sci-fi comedy to warp your mind (and garden shed). Warren’s typical life is turned upside down when his teenage daughter, Lucy, is sucked into an interdimensional portal in his shed, and he leaps in after her, traversing twisted alternate versions of the sleepy suburban setting of Lower Hutt, New Zealand. All episodes arrive at once on-demand.

Savage Mountain (Sky Documentaries, 9pm) – 11th August

Savage Mountain follows Kristin Harila’s rapid rise from relative newcomer to world‐record‐breaking mountaineer, as she completes all 14 of the world’s highest peaks in just 92 days alongside her climbing partner, Tenjen Lama Sherpa. But as their achievement made global headlines, footage from K2 sparked intense controversy, placing Kristin at the centre of a worldwide debate about ambition, ethics and how extreme achievements are portrayed.

Frank Skinner: 30 Years of Dirty (Sky One, 9pm) – 14th August

Following a sell-out UK tour, comedy legend Frank Skinner brings his critically acclaimed show 30 Years of Dirt to Sky and streaming service NOW in a brand-new stand-up special, filmed in front of a live audience at Soho Theatre Walthamstow.

Fightland (Sky Atlantic, 9pm) – 27th August

Executive-produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, the series is a gripping story of redemption, betrayal and brutal ambition – in and out of the ring. With edge-of-your- seat action and a gritty setting populated by dangerous characters, this is a world of money and power never seen before. On the night that British-born boxer Duke Kilroy (Howard Charles) becomes world heavyweight champion, a vicious assault leaves his brother, Calvin, dead. Duke is devastated and his reaction in the aftermath costs him eight years in a U.S. prison. Upon his release, and after having made a sinister discovery, Duke returns home seeking vengeance against the man he believes set him up – the criminal kingpin and former promoter, Kingsley Marshall (Nicholas Pinnock). But Kingsley has vanished, leaving his children and wife, Joy (Deborah Ayorinde), who happens to be the love of Duke’s life, to pick up the pieces. All episodes arrive at once on-demand.

Tea with Judi Dench featuring Sir Ian McKellan – Date TBC

Dame Judi Dench is joined by her great friend Sir Ian McKellen for tea and a warm, candid conversation about their extraordinary lives both on stage and off. From Shakespeare, stage fright and the insecurities of acting to the worldwide fame of the Lord of the Rings and James Bond movies, they reflect on success, failure and the importance of never taking either too seriously. Along the way Ian speaks movingly about coming out, his defining role in the fight against Section 28, and one of his greatest regrets; never sharing the truth about himself with his parents.

Heretic – 1st August

Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr Reed (Hugh Grant), becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.

Seven Snipers – 7th August

A retired sniper in hiding on an Australian ranch must reunite her elite kill squad when a vengeful warlord threatens her daughter.

Song Sung Blue – 7th August

Based on a true story, two down-on-their-luck musicians (Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson) form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band, proving it’s never too late to find love and follow your dreams.

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie – 8th August

That’s not all folks! Porky Pig and Daffy Duck, one of the greatest comedic duos in history, are making their hilarious return in this sci-fi comedy adventure. Porky and Daffy are our unlikely heroes and Earth’s only hope when facing the threat of alien invasion. In this buddy-comedy of epic proportions, they race to save the world, delivering all the laugh-out-loud gags and vibrant visuals that have made the Looney Tunes so iconic, but on a scope and scale yet to be experienced. It’s going to be out of this world!

Tom and Jerry: The Forbidden Compass – 14th August

During a chase inside a museum, Tom and Jerry find a magical object that transports them through time. They must work together to find a way home.

Hamnet – 14th August

From Oscar-winning writer/director Chloé Zhao, Hamnet tells the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet. Starring Jessie Buckley in an Oscar and BAFTA winning role, alongside Paul Mescal and Emily Watson.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 – 21st August

One year has passed since the supernatural nightmare at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The stories about what transpired there have been twisted into a campy local legend, inspiring the town’s first ever Fazfest. Former security guard Mike (Josh Hutcherson) and police officer Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) have kept the truth from Mike’s 11-year-old sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), concerning the fate of her animatronic friends. Charlie the Wonderdog – 21st August

A dog gains superpowers after he is abducted by aliens. Together, they battle an evil cat threatening humanity while the dog becomes a famous superhero.

A young man left broken by the loss of his twin brother joins a support group for ‘twinless twins’.

GOAT – 28th August

From Sony Pictures Animation, the studio behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, comes GOAT, an original action-comedy set in an all-animal world. The story follows Will, a small goat with big dreams who gets a once-in-a-lifetime shot to join the pros and play roarball – a high-intensity, co-ed, full-contact sport dominated by the fastest, fiercest animals in the world. Will’s new teammates aren’t thrilled about having a little goat on their roster, but Will is determined torevolutionize the sport and prove once and for all that “smalls can ball!”
