Julia Roberts to produce and star in Amazon’s Little Bee

Julia Roberts is producing Little Bee, a new film for Amazon Studios based on Chris Cleave’s novel.
The book, first published as The Other Hand in 2008, is the second from the Gold and Incendiary author and was a best-seller. It tells the story of two women, whose lives collide one fateful day, leaving one of them to make a terrible choice. Two years later, they meet again, the story begins.
The film was once eyed by Nicole Kidman to star and produce for BBC Films, but that project never got off the ground. Now, as Kidman’s Blossom Films signs a first-look deal with Amazon Studios, the online giant has also inked an agreement with Roberts to produce a new adaptation of Cleave’s book.
Kathleen Robertson (Murder in the First) will pen the script, with Roberts set to play one of the two women – Sarah O’Rourke, the editor of a British magazine. Roberts’ Red Om Films is producing the project, with Lisa Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill producing alongside the Notting Hill star. Gil Netter is also attached as a producer.
Roberts is no stranger to Amazon Studios, with the actress already set to star in Homecoming, Amazon’s new original drama series based on the podcast of the same name.
