What’s leaving Netflix UK in June / July 2018?
David Farnor | On 16, Jun 2018
What to watch in between World Cup games this summer? Netflix UK has an easy answer, as the streaming service bids goodbye to a host of modern classics, from a hysterical Jane Austen adaptation to a Spielberg spy thriller. This is month is your last chance to stream the following:
Love & Friendship – 18th June
Not just the tale of a widow (Kate Beckinsale) riding out the rumours of her romantic liaisons, while trying to find a suitor for her young daughter (Morfydd Clark), Love and Friendship is also a non-stop string of witty insults and catty shots – and Beckinsale is brilliant at firing them out. Whit Stillman’s hilarious period comedy is Jane Austen as you’ve never seen her before.
Bridge of Spies – 19th June
How do you make a Steven Spielberg film starring Tom Hanks better? Hire Mark Rylance. This underplayed war flick about a lwyer defending an anti-American in court boils down to a riveting two-hander. Thrillingly simple – and simply riveting.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – 21st June
On a Victory Tour of the districts, Katniss and Peeta discover their Hunger Games triumph has sparked a rebellion – while President Snow plots the 75th Hunger Games that could change Panem forever. Or, to put it another way, Jennifer Lawrence. Philip Seymour Hoffman. The Hunger Games. Enough said.
Schindler’s List – 21st June
Steven Spielberg’s telling of the true story of Oskar Schindler, a factory owner who risked his own life to save his Jewish workforce from the Holocaust in World War, is a powerful, important masterpiece.
Nerve – 29th June
Catfish directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman take on the modern digital world with this film about a high school senior (Emma Roberts) who decides to join a popular online game that challenges players to accept a series of dares – a reality social media contest that takes a dangerous, sinister turn. A techno-tale with a thrilling, beating pulse.
Hunger – 29th June
Michael Fassbender delivers an unflinching performance in Steve McQueen’s powerful drama about Irish republican Bobby Sands, who led the inmates of a Northern Irish prison in a hunger strike.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World – 30th June
dgar Wright’s hyperactive style is a perfect fit for Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels about Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera), a member of the band Sex Bom-Omb and a video game obsessive. Torn between two women, one of whom (Ramona Flowers) is literally his dream love, Scott has to fight all of Ramona’s exes to date her. This coming-of-age comedy tackles everything from projecting your ideals onto others and getting over past relationships to the way a young man uses computer games to understand the world. The stunning visuals, exciting action and laugh-out-loud jokes are the icing on a pixellated cake.
Kick-Ass – 30th June
Why so serious? Matthew Vaughn’s twisted, funny take on superheroes, based on the Mark Millar comics, is fun, thrilling and gloriously violent.
Bridesmaids – 30th June
Kristen Wiig is the beleaguered head bridesmaid as bedlam breaks out in the run-up to her best friend’s wedding.
Fighting – 30th June
Channing Tatum delivers a breakout performance in this hard-hitting sports drama.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople – 30th June
Taika Waititi’s comedy is a charmingly offbeat affair, as Sam Neill plays a weary, grumpy bloke in the New Zealand bush, who finds himself lumbered with a young city kid Ricky. Stranded in the wilderness, they become the subjects of a nationwide manhunt. The result is daftly over-the-top and undoubtedly majestical.
In Bruges – 30th June
Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are on hilarious form in Martin McDonagh’s profane, profound thriller about two hitmen lying low in the titular Belgian town.
The Breakfast Club – 5th July
Don’t you forget about me…
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid – 7th July
After owning Glastonbury, Burt Bacharach takes on Netflix with the arrival of this fantastic Western by George Roy Hill and William Goldman. Paul Newman as Butch and Robert Redford as Sundance make the story of these Wild West outlaws as funny as it is flashy. The performance of Bacharach’s Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head, complete with bicycle, seals the deal.
Eye in the Sky – 14th July
Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman, Barkhad Abdi and Aaron Paul star in this morality play about drone warfare, which grips tightly with well-chosen words and assured direction.
All About Eve – 15th July
Anne Baxter and Bette Davis are on astonishing form in this Hollywood drama about Hollywood, which sees aspiring actress and Machiavellian conniver Eve Harrington manoeuvre her way into the life of Broadway star Margo Channing, and ultimately eclipse her. Bubbling with fire, fury and a ferocious understanding of how fame, obsession and showbiz work, this winner of six Academy Oscars is a stone cold classic.
