Zack Snyder is reteaming with Netflix after Army of the Dead for a new animated series set in the world of Norse mythology.
First announced back in 2019, the series is co-created with Jay Oliva (Trese, Batman The Dark Knight Returns, Justice League The Flashpoint Paradox), who will serve as showrunner, director and exec-producer. The show promises to “bring the iconic characters and stories of Norse mythology to life”.
Now, we’ve got an idea of who he’s got to help do that, with a star-studded cast featuring everyone from Game of Thrones’ Tormund and Euron Greyjoy to Sense8’s Nomi and House of Cards’ Peter Russo.
Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049) will star as SIGRID, alongside Stuart Martin (Jamestown) as LEIF, Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones) as THOR, John Noble (The Lord of the Rings) as ODIN, Paterson Joseph (The Mosquito Coast) as LOKI, Rahul Kohli (iZombie) as EGILL, Jamie Clayton (Sense8) as THE SEID-KONA, Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones) as ANDVARI, Peter Stormare (Fargo) as ULFR, Jamie Chung (Big Hero 6) as HEL, Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead) as INGE and Corey Stoll (House of Cards) as HRAFNKEL.
Zack Snyder to create Norse anime for Netflix
12th July 2019
Zack Snyder (Watchmen, Man of Steel) will create an all-new anime series set in the world of Norse mythology.
Netflix is significantly stepping up its anime game, with an expanding library that includes Ultraman, Aggretsuko, Castlevania, Devilman Crybaby, GODZILLA: The Planet Eater, BAKI, Violet Evergarden, B: The Beginning, and The Seven Deadly Sins. Other animated titles based on global IP include Magic: The Gathering, Pacific Rim, Altered Carbon, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, and Transformers: War for Cybertron, all of which are currently in development. Now, it’s turning to Norse mythology for its latest anime, and it’s tapped the director of graphic novel adaptation 300 to do it.
Snyder, who is already working on Army of the Dead for Netflix, will serve as exec producer on the project and is creating it alongside Jay Oliva (Trese, Batman The Dark Knight Returns, Justice League The Flashpoint Paradox). Oliva will serve as showrunner, director, and executive producer. The pair have had a longstanding creative partnership, spanning over a dozen live action feature films, including Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, 300: Rise of an Empire, and Man of Steel.
Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller will produce the series alongside Snyder through Stone Quarry Animation, their production company’s newest venture with Oliva. Oliva is also currently in production on the Manila-set Netflix original anime Trese.
“Zack Snyder’s innovation in visual storytelling has pushed the industry forward and established him as one of the most distinctive filmmakers of his generation. We are beyond excited to partner with him and his exceptional team to bring the iconic characters and stories of Norse mythology to life in his inimitable style,” says John Derderian, head of Anime programming for Netflix.
