Trailer: Sound of Metal set for April UK release

Sound of Metal will be released in the UK this April, Amazon has announced.
The film, which is directed and co-written by Darius Marder, follows itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed). During a series of adrenaline-fueled one-night gigs, he begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career — and with it his life — is over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent a relapse and help him learn to adapt to his new situation. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew. Using innovative sound design techniques, director Darius Marder takes audiences inside Ruben’s experience to vividly recreate his journey into a rarely examined world.
Co-starring Olivia Cooke, Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff and Mathieu Amalric, the film has become a key player in this year’s awards race, nominated for four BAFTA Awards, including Best Actor. Originally intended for release in the UK on 29th January, before the coronavirus pandemic led to cinema closures, the film’s theatrical release has instead been pushed back to 17th May, the date at which indoor hospitality and entertainment venues aim to reopen as part of the gradual lifting of lockdown measures.
Now, however, Amazon has announced that the film – which is an Amazon Original will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video from 12th April. It will then be available in UK cinemas from 17th May, courtesy of Vertigo Releasing.
The film joins a number of other high-profile Amazon exclusives and originals arriving next month, including Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse (30th April), Palm Springs (9th April) and The Mauritanian (1st April).
