ITV has renewed Crime for Season 2, following a successful first season on BritBox UK.
Directed by James Strong (Broadchurch, and Vigil) and David Blair (Isolation Stories, The Barking Murders), the crime drama is based on Irvine Welsh’s best-selling novel and was adapted by Welsh and his long-standing screenwriting partner Dean Cavanagh (Creation Stories). It follows Edinburgh-based Detective Inspector Ray Lennox (Dougray Scott), a man engaged in a disturbing battle with his own demons, through the demanding and very public medium of serious crime investigations.
Scott is joined on screen by Joanna Vanderham (Warrior, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) as DS Amanda Drummond, Angela Griffin (Harlots, Dun Breedin’, White Lines) as Trudi Lowe, Ken Stott (The Dig, Fortitude, Devils) as Chief Superintendent Bob Toal and Jamie Sives (Guilt, Too Close) as Detective Inspector Dougie Gillman.
“Dougray Scott delivers an excellent lead turn in Irvine Welsh’s dark crime drama,” we wrote in our review of Season 1.
Season 2 will catch up with Lennox, now settled back into life with Edinburgh’s Serious Crimes team, having recovered from a breakdown after the toll of his last investigation. And when a high-ranking member of the establishment is found dead in a Leith warehouse, Lennox is thrown into a case which quickly reveals itself as the work of a serial killer. As victims mount up, Lennox realises these are anything but random. This is the work of a solitary killer with an axe to grind. Never far from his psychological turmoil, Lennox is pushed back towards his demons by this new case.
Scott, who also serves as executive producer, says: “Making Crime has been one of the most exhilarating experiences of my career. I’m so grateful to get to work once again with the great Irvine Welsh, my wonderful producing partner Tony Wood and all at Buccaneer and ITV. I feel very fortunate.”
Season 2 will debut on ITVX, ITV’s soon-to-be-rebranded streaming platform, which will bring together ITV Hub and BritBox in one place. It will stream exclusively on the platform for several months before it then gets a linear broadcast on ITV. Season 1 will also be made available for free on ITVX ahead of Season 2’s premiere.
ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill, adds: “Crime was a brilliantly original series and a perfect fit for ITVX, where we want to showcase drama as distinctive and original as this police procedure from Irvine Welsh. The next chapter in Lennox’s story is just as bold and we look forward to introducing a new audience to Crime when it comes onto ITVX next year. Huge thanks to the brilliance of Irvine Welsh, Dougray Scott and Buccaneer Media.”
Filming will begin this summer.

Directed by James Strong (Broadchurch, and Vigil) and David Blair (Isolation Stories, The Barking Murders), the series is based on Welsh’s best-selling novel and adapted by Welsh and his long-standing screenwriting partner Dean Cavanagh (Creation Stories). All three are exec-producing, alongside Scott, Tony Wood, Richard Tulk-Hart and Pamela Hansson.
