Will Season 4 of The Bold Type be released on Amazon Prime Video UK?

This past week has seen the return of the underrated comedy-drama The Bold Type in the US. Freeform’s series which is produced by Universal Television, is inspired by the life of Joanna Coles (former Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan). It follows the outrageous lives and loves of those responsible for fictional women’s magazine Scarlet. The rising generation of Scarlet women lean on one another as they find their own voices in a sea of intimidating leaders. Together, they explore sexuality, identity, love and fashion.
The Bold Type follows Jane (Katie Stevens, Faking It), Kat (Aisha Dee, Sweet/Vicious) and Sutton (Meghann Fahy, Miss Sloane), three young women juggling careers, love lives and embracing their identities. They’re joined by a cast that includes Sam Page (Self/less), Matt Ward (Arrow), Stephen Conrad Moore (Chicago P.D.) and Melora Hardin (17 Again) as Jacqueline, Editor-in-Chief of Scarlet Magazine.
The show was renewed for Season 4 last year, shortly after its third season aired. The fourth season picks up as Adena (Nikohl Boosheri) takes a job as Scarlet’s in-house photographer, putting her and on-off girlfriend Kat closer together. Ryan, meanwhile, is trying to win Jane back, Richard and Sutton are facing a long-distance relationship, and our three protagonists are teaming up to save Jacqueline’s job.
Seasons 1 to 3 have premiered in the UK on Amazon Prime Video, as part of an Amazon Prime subscription. But with Season 4 debuting on Freeform on 23rd January, it looks like Amazon Prime will not be carrying the show this season.
“The Bold Type Season 4 will not be launching on Prime Video. Season 1-3 are still available to watch on the service,” Amazon said in a statement to freelancer reporter Rebecca Lewis earlier this month.
Since then, UK fans have repeatedly called for Season 4 to be released on Amazon Prime Video, but Amazon has only responded on social media with comments that it does not have any further information. We have reached out to Amazon to confirm the show’s current status, but as it stands, it appears that Season 4 will only be available to buy online through iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Prime Video at an unconfirmed future date – unless another streamer steps in to snap up the rights.

“Where The Bold Type really excels is the collision of big city dreams and aspirational gloss with explorations of some of the most prominent issues of today,” we wrote in our review of the show. “A series showing women of various ages quietly getting the hell on with it is something that we’d definitely subscribe to.”
The show, which airs on Freeform in the USA, returned to Amazon Prime Video in the UK last month for its third season. Now, within weeks of that debut, Freeform has ordered a fourth. Dee, Fahy and Stevens announced the news during Freeform’s part of Disney’s upfront presentation in New York this week. With the new season come a new showrunner, with Amanda Lasher, who took over the reins in Season 2, to be replaced by Wendy Straker Hauser, who has been a producer on the series since it began.
