Amazon wins awards for Transparent – a full list of the 2015 Golden Globe winners (and where to watch them on VOD)

Amazon beat Netflix last night to take home two Golden Globe awards for Transparent. The TV series, which stars Jeffrey Tambor as a father who comes out as a woman to his family, won Best Actor for Tambor’s performance, but also won Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy – the first ever online TV show to take home one of the big prizes.
The double win saw Amazon overtake its VOD rival, Netflix, for the first time in an awards ceremony. In fact, this is the first time that Amazon has ever received an award nomination. Netflix is no stranger to the glitz and glamour, with House of Cards picking up Best Actress for Robin Wright last year and Orange Is the New Black now nominated four times in two years. 2015 finally saw Kevin Spacey get his first Golden Globe for his performance as Frank Underwood in the political drama, but that was the only win on the night for Netflix. For Amazon to take home two on its first try is a sign not only that web TV is becoming increasingly accepted by viewers (the voters for the Golden Globes are members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association) but also that Amazon is capable of producing quality to compete with the best networks out there.
We hailed the show as the most important of 2014 when it was first released – read our interview with Jeffrey Tambor here – thanks to its shining a spotlight on usually overlooked LGBT issues, as well as its VOD race-shifting potential.
In the film arena, Boyhood deservedly took home Best Drama, as well as Best Director for Richard Linklater, while The Grand Budapest Hotel unexpectedly overtook Birdman in the Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy category – although Michael Keaton still flew off with his Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) award. The dramatic acting prize went to Eddie Redmayne, who beat competition from fellow Brits Benedict Cumberbatch and David Oyelowo to win for his turn in The Theory of Everything. Whiplash won the Best Supporting Actor for J.K. Simmons’ sadistic music teacher, while Patricia Arquette won Best Supporting Actress for Boyhood.
Other Brits who enjoyed success include Ruth Wilson for her lead performance in US series The Affair. While that does not have a UK broadcaster yet – and several current theatrical releases are not on VOD – many of this year’s winners are already available to stream, thanks to Leviathan (Best Foreign Language Film) getting a day-and-date release last year and Boyhood hopping onto digital platforms ahead of its DVD release next week.
