Sam Shepard’s True West will be available to watch online in the UK this January.
The Tricycle Theatre’s production, which was performed in 2014, stars Alex Ferns (Legend, Wallander, EastEnders) and Eugene O’Hare (Prometheus The Fall, Red Velvet) as estranged brothers. Written by one of America’s most renowned living playwrights, Shepard’s two-act drama is recognised as a modern classic and enjoyed acclaim from theatregoers and critics.
For those who missed the show, though, director Phillip Breen’s production has been filmed by Digital Theatre, a VOD service that allows students, teachers and theatre lovers to buy and rent plays online. Digital Theatre is currently compatible with iOS devices, Samsung Smart TV and YouView boxes, as well as desktop computers.
The play follows Austin (“the achiever”), a screenwriter on the verge of success, who is working on a script he has sold to a Hollywood producer while house-sitting for his mother in LA. When his brother, Lee (“the drifter”), decides to stop by, he pitches his own idea for a movie and convinces the producer to ditch Austin’s love story for his own trashy Western.
Now, they must work together to secure the deal, as mistrust and jealousy bubbles under the surface.
True West will be released exclusively on Digital Theatre on Wednesday 20th January 2016. Read on for the trailer – or, for more on theatre productions available to stream, see our Digital Theatre reviews.
