Riverdale swept the board at the 2018 Teen Choice awards last night, with the CW and Netflix teen drama bagging 10 awards.
The show, which is based on Archie Comic Books, has become something of a sensation since its premiere in 2016, with not only KJ Apa’s Archie attracting eyeballs but Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart’s Jughead and Betty Cooper swiftly becoming fan favourites and modern hearthrobs. While Netflix, which airs the show weekly after its debut stateside, doesn’t release viewing figures for the show, its popularity was confirmed last night, with the series bagging 10 out of its 12 nominations.
The event, which celebrates the best in film, TV, music, sports, fashion, comedy, is decided by more than 150 million votes cast by teens on Twitter and FOX.com. At a ceremony that featuredd Meghan Trainor, Foster the People and Khalid, Riverdale was the real star, crowned Best TV Drama, Best Actor (Sprouse) and Best Actress (Reinhart).
Other prizes awarded to the show included Best Villain (Mark Consuelos’ Hiram Lodge), Best Breakout TV Star (Vanessa Morgan’s Veronica Lodge), Best TVShip – for Bughead, naturally – Best Liplock (Bughead again), Best Hissy Fit (for Madelaine Petsch’s Cheryl), Best Scene Stealer (for Morgan) and Best Male Hottie (for Sprouse, of course).
Riverdale wasn’t Netflix’s only winner, though, with Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments (another Netflix exclusive in the UK) taking home Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show and Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actor for star Matthew Daddario. Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown, meanwhile, won Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actress, and Netflix’s teen comedy On My Block was named Best Breakout TV Show.
In a sign of how big an influence Netflix has upon viewers, Friends was named Best Throwback TV Show, following its addition to Netflix at the start of the year. Amazon’s exclusive acquisition of Cloak & Dagger, meanwhile, walked away with Best Summer TV Star for Olivia Holt.
In the movies category, Zac Efron and Zendaya won Best Actor and Actress (and Best MovieShip) for The Greatest Showman, which was also named Best Drama. Chris Hemsworth won Best Sci-Fi Actor for Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther won the Best Sci-Fi Movie prize, with the Best Sci-Fi Movie Actress gong also going to Letitia Wright.
Riverdale’s success arrives after news of a second Riverdale spin-off series and ahead of its Season 3 UK premiere on Thursday 11th October. For more on Season 3, watch the trailer here.
