A new Riverdale spin-off is in the works, the series’ showrunner has confirmed, as crossovers with the upcoming Sabrina series are ruled out.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which began life at The CW and is based Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s own comic books, will premiere on Netflix on 26th October – a few weeks after Season 3 of Riverdale debuts new episodes, starting 11th October. But any crossover between the two shows those are not planned, Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed at The CW’s TCA press tour panel (via Deadline).
The CW president Mark Pedowitz also commented that no crossover episodes are in the works, and no cameos will take place this autumn.
“I think right now we’re just making sure that the shows have their own identities and own set of rules,” explained Aguirre-Sacasa.
Nonetheless, there’s still a spin-off on the way, the talkative Riverdale creator revealed.
“We’re still early on in the process,” he noted, but described the series as “very different” from Riverdale. The show will not be that far off, though, with Aguirre-Sacasa commenting that it would be “in this development cycle” at The CW.
Aguirre-Sacasa also dropped a number of plot details for Riverdale’s third season, including a long-anticipated flashback episode that wlil feature the town’s adults as high school kids. Titled The Midnight Club, it’s “our take on The Breakfast Club”, Roberto added, with each of the younger cast members playing their parents.
“We learn learn about a really dark secret that the parents have been keeping since they were in high school,” he hinted. “We’ve been teasing this for years, going back to Season 1. I call this the ‘Lili Reinhart Memorial episode’ because she’s been wanting to do a flashback episode for years.”
There will also be a wedding episode “between an ex-sheriff and ex-major”, he teased, noting that Tom Keller and Sierra McCoy are “the most stable relationship on Riverdale right now”.
Speaking of which, what of Veronica and Archie? Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed that a new love interest for young Miss Lodge is on the cards that we “might see seeds of that in Episode 3”.
Veronica’s mum, meanwhile, will “delicately stand up to her better half”, Hiram.
As for Jughead and Betty, they “really define what Serpent Queen means and whether they’re all in or not”, he promised.
