Diana musical to debut on Netflix before Broadway reopens
13th August 2020
A Broadway musical about Princess Diana will premiere on Netflix before it opens officially on the stage.
The streamer has increasingly moved into the digital theatre space in recent years, with planned productions of The Prom from Ryan Murphy and Tick Tick… Boom! from Lin-Manuel Miranda and an adaptation of the musical 13 set to join existing recordings of Rodney King, Oh, Hell on Broadway, Springsteen on Broadway and a filmed version of America Son.
In a first, though, Diana: A New Musical will premiere on Netflix before its stage debut. The musical was set to premiere earlier this year on Broadway, but the coronavirus outbreak prompted a closure of all theatres just before its opening night. It now has a new reopening date of 25th May 2021.
Before then, the musical – starring Jeanne de Wall – will be filmed in the empty Longacre Theatre, directed by Christopher Ashley. Jeanne will be joined by Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles, and Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth.
The production will include rehearsals and a recording of a cast album as well as the filmed production.
“We speak for the entire company when we say that we couldn’t be more excited to finally be able share our show with theater lovers everywhere,” said the producers in a statement today. “Though there is no substitute for the live theater, we are honored to be a part of the quality entertainment that Netflix provides its subscribers worldwide.”
