Oscars 2022: The winners and where to watch them online
David Farnor | On 28, Mar 2022
Apple TV+ made history last night as it became the first streaming service to take home Best Picture at the Oscars.
The relatively young streaming platform went into the night as both underdog and major player, with Netflix leading the pack with 27 Oscar nods – more than any other studio for the third year in a row and up from 25 last year. With Jane Campion’s The Power of the dog competing for 12 awards, including Best Picture and acting gongs for Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee, not to mention Directing for Campion, this looked to be the year when Netflix finally claimed the Academy Awards crown.
CODA, though, was the big winner on the night, not only taking home Best Picture but winning in all three categories it was nominated for, including Best Adapted Screenplay by writer-director Siân Heder (who based the US remake on the French film La Famille Belier) and Troy Kotsur for Best Supporting Actor, the first deaf actor to win the prize at the Oscars – and the second deaf performer to win an Academy Award, after Marlee Matlin (who co-starred in CODA) won for Children of a Lesser God in 1986. It’s a major step up for Apple, which acquired the rights to CODA in a landmark $25 million deal after its Sundance premiere.
The other significant streak of the night belonged to Dune, which took home 6 of the 10 awards it was nominated for, although ABC and the Academy’s decision not to air the craft awards as part of the main ceremony meant that Dune’s success went largely unseen.
Elsewhere, Jessica Chastain took home the Leading Actress prize for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling, while West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose made history as the first queer woman of colour to win the Supporting Actress prize. Summer of Soul, Questlove’s directorial debut, won the Best Documentary prize. Also streaming on Disney+ alongside those is Encanto, which took home Best Animated Feature.
Kenneth Branagh’s Best Picture hopeful Belfast bagged Best Original Screenplay, while Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car, also nominated for Best Picture, Best Directing and Best Adapted Screenplay, raced its way to the Best International Feature prize.
Will Smith won Best Actor for his role in King Richard, with an incident between him and Chris Rock dominating headlines the morning after the ceremony, but that doesn’t detract from the significance of who won awards on the night. While Netflix didn’t make history, Jane Campion did, becoming the third woman to win the Best Directing prize at the Oscars, and the second in a row after Chloé Zhao won the helming prize last year for Nomadland.
