13: The Musical is being adapted into a family film for Netflix.
The musical, which is a staple for high school theatre groups in the US, follows a move from New York City to small-town Indiana, as young Evan Goldman grapples with his parents’ divorce, prepares for his impending Bar Mitzvah, and navigates the complicated social circles of a new school.
The Broadway version of the show featured the first and only all-teenager cast and band and served as professional debuts of Ariana Grande and Elizabeth Gillies.
Tony Award winner Robert Horn will adapt the script based on the book he co-wrote with Dan Elish, and three-time Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown will compose new music for the Netflix adaptation. Earlier this year, Brown received a Tony Award for Tootsie, previously co-created the sitcom Partners starring Kelsey Grammer and Martin Lawrence and penned the hit Disney Channel Original Movie Teen Beach Movie.
Tamra Davis is attached to direct. Davis began her career directing music videos for acts such as Tone Loc, Sonic Youth and NWA before directing her first feature Guncrazy starring Drew Barrymore. She’s more recently known for her prolific TV work directing episodes of acclaimed shows including Empire, Santa Clarita Diet and Crazy Ex- Girlfriend.
