Emmy 2022 nominations: Succession, Ted Lasso out in front
James R | On 12, Jul 2022
The nominations for the 2022 Emmy Awards have been unveiled and Succession is leading the pack, followed closely by Ted Lasso.
HBO’s financial family drama has a total of 25 nods, including Outstanding Drama and a slew of acting nominations, ahead of Apple TV+’s footballing comedy, which has 20 nominations to its name (including Outstanding Comedy), alongside HBO’s The White Lotus (including Limited Series and a number of nods for Supporting Actress in a Limited Series).
In the Outstanding Drama category, Succession will be facing off against Better Call Saul, Euphoria, Severance, Ozark, Stranger Thing, Yellowjackets and Squid Game. The latter is the first non-English-language show to be nominated in the Outstanding Drama category – although the Emmys international scope didn’t extend to Pachinko, the Apple TV+ drama that was snubbed save for a nod for its opening titles.
Also making history is Zendaya, the youngest two-time Emmy nominee for her leading turn in Euphoria. She will be facing off against Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Laura Linney (Ozark), Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) and Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show) for the acting prize, while Lead Actor in a Drama will be fought between Jason Bateman (Ozark), Brian Cox (Succession), Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Adam Scott (Severance) and Jeremy Strong (Succession).
Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) is once again competing for Lead Actor in a Comedy against Donald Glover (Atlanta), Bill Hader (Barry), Nicholas Hoult (The Great), Steve Martin (Only Murders in the Building) and Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building). Notably not nominated is Selena Gomez for Only Murders in the Building, with the Lead Actress in a Comedy category a contest between Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant), Elle Fanning (The Great), Issa Rae (Insecure) and Jean Smart (Hacks).
Supporting Actress in a Drama will be fought between Patricia Arquette (Severance), Julia Garner (Ozark), Jung Ho-yeon (Squid Game), Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets), Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul), J Smith-Cameron (Succession), Sarah Snook (Succession) and Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria). Supporting Actor in a Drama will be go to either Nicholas Braun (Succession), Billy Crudup (The Morning Show), Kieran Culkin (Succession), Park Hae-soo (Squid Game), Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), John Turturro (Severance), Christopher Walken (Severance) or Oh Yeong-su (Squid Game).
Ted Lasso has scored multiple nods in the Supporting Comedy categories, with Sarah Niles, Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingom all up for Actress, alongside Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Hannah Einbinder (Hacks), Janelle James (Abbott Elementary) and Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), and Brett Goldstein, Toheeb Jimoh and Nick Mohammed all up for Actor, alongside Anthony Carrigan (Barry), Tony Shalhoub (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Tyler James Williams (Abbott Elementary), Henry Winkler (Barry) and Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live).
Other welcome nominees include The Great for both Nicholas Hoult and Elle Fanning’s performances, plus a wave of nods for Abbott Elementary – including Outstanding Comedy, alongside Barry, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Hacks, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Only Murders in the Building, Ted Lasso and What We Do in the Shadows. The Limited Series prize will go to either Dopesick, The Dropout, Inventing Anna. Pam and Tommy or The White Lotus.
Snubs range from Sadie Sink in Stranger Things and Jessica Chastain in Scenes from a Marriage to Jennifer Aniston in The Morning Show. And, notably absent due to a change in the eligibility rules (shows must have premiered between June 2021 and May 2022), are such favourites as The Handmaid’s Tale, The Crown and The Boys.
