Netflix has renewed Kid Cosmic for a third season, before its second has even premiered.
The animated series follows the adventures of an imaginative and enthusiastic boy who lives with his free-spirited grandpa in a sparsely populated desert town. His dreams of being a hero seem to come true when he discovers 5 Cosmic Stones of Power in a wrecked spaceship. But when they send a signal out containing the whereabouts of the most powerful and desirable artefacts in the cosmos, the Earth becomes ground zero for an epic battle for ultimate power. To stop the alien onslaught, the kid gives the powerful rings to local heroes who become the good guys… even though they’re bad at it. His team includes a multiplying old man, a teleporting teen, a giant little girl and a cat who can see the future.
The series was ordered by Netflix in 2018 and hails from Craig McCracken (The Powerpuff Girls, Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends).
“This silly, smart superhero comedy is a charming family tale of teamwork,” we wrote in our review of Season 1, which praised the show for its gentle message that being a hero isn’t what people think it means, with a focus on supporting others and trying to help not hurt.
After premiering in February this year, the show returns to Netflix this September for Season 2. The streamer, though, has already greenlit a third outing.
“For me, making three seasons of Kid Cosmic has been one of the most creatively rewarding experiences of my career,” McCracken said in a statement. “Working in cartoons, it’s easy to get stuck making the same kind of episodes over and over again. But with Kid Cosmic, we loved the freedom to not only make each season different, but to allow the characters to grow, to change, and to learn from their experiences. In these three seasons of Kid Cosmic, we get to explore the idea of what it truly means to be a hero, as each season focuses on a different character and a different theme. In Season 1, the Kid learns that heroes help; in Season 2, Jo discovers that heroes care; and finally, in Season 3, it is Papa G who accepts that heroes sacrifice.”
