Netflix cancels Naomi Watts thriller Gypsy
David Farnor | On 12, Aug 2017
Netflix has cancelled Gypsy after one season.
The psychological thriller, which was written by Lisa Rubin and directed by Fifty Shades Of Grey’s Sam Taylor Johnson, stars Naomi Watts as a therapist who begins to develop illicit relationships with the people in her patients’ lives.
With Billy Crudup and Lucy Boynton also on the cast list, the series was one of Netflix’s star-studded original projects. The end result, though, was an underwhelming series that was met with a decidedly lukewarm response.
“Gypsy immediately comes across as dull, lifeless, and particularly empty,” we wrote in our review. “The experience is hollow and transparent. Unless its narrative suddenly picks up, Gypsy may be one Netflix original to cut your losses and run from.”
Now, Netflix has done just that, with Deadline reporting that the programme will not return for a second season. Netflix had reportedly been in talks with producers about a second run, with a writers room “up and running for four weeks” working on storylines for a sophomore outing.
The cancellation of Gypsy joins a growing number of projects that have not been renewed by Netflix, as the streaming service seeks to balance its costly budget with the need for more original content to support its international growth. It follows the decision to renew wrestling series GLOW for Season 2.
Watch the opening titles for Netflix’s Gypsy
27th July 2017
It’s only a matter of days until Gypsy premieres on Netflix, and to give us a taste of what to expect, the streaming service has unveiled the show’s opening credits.
You can tell a lot about a series from its titles – you can read more about the ones for Daredevil, True Detective and Halt and Catch Fire here – and Gypsy’s give us an insight into showrunner Lisa Rubin’s inspiration for the programme. She wrote the pilot while listening to the Fleetwood Mac track from 1982, leading Netflix to commission its original writer, Stevie Nicks, to record a new version of the song.
The series marks Rubin’s first TV project, with Fifty Shades Of Grey’s Sam Taylor Johnson directing. It stars Naomi Watts as Jean Halloway, a Manhattan therapist with a seemingly picturesque life who begins to develop intimate and illicit relationships with the people in her patients’ lives. As the borders of Jean’s professional life and personal fantasies become blurred, she descends into a world where the forces of desire and reality are disastrously at odds.
Gypsy also stars Billy Crudup (Spotlight) as Jean’s husband and Lucy Boynton (Murder on the Orient Express) as Jean’s patient, Allison, and Karl Glusman (Nocturnal Animals) as another patient, Sam.
Gypsy premieres on Friday 30th June. Watch the opening credits here, or scroll down to see a full trailer:
