MUBI will release Annette in UK cinemas this September, and a new trailer gives us a look at Leos Carax’s latest.
Adam Driver (House of Gucci, Marriage Story, Paterson) and Marion Cotillard (Inception, La Vie en Rose, Macbeth) star as a provocative stand-up comedian and internationally renowned opera singer living in contemporary Los Angeles: a seemingly perfect couple constantly in the good graces of the media spotlight. However, when they welcome their daughter Annette into the world, they soon learn that her mysterious and ethereal gifts will change their lives forever.
The film also co-stars Simon Helberg (The Big Bang Theory) and Belgian singer-songwriter Angèle in her acting debut. The screenplay is written by Ron Mael and Russell Mael of Sparks, and the film also features songs from Sparks and music producer Marius de Vries (La La Land, Bohemian Rhapsody, Moulin Rouge).
The film had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it opened the event, and went on to win the Best Director award. Now, MUBI has confirmed that it will release the film in UK and Ireland cinemas on 3rd September. The movie will then go on to stream exclusively on MUBI on 26th November.

MUBI acquires Leos Carax’s Annette for September UK release
10th June 2021
MUBI has acquired the UK and Ireland rights to Annette, the latest film from Holy Motors helmer Leos Carax.
The film stars Adam Driver (House of Gucci, Marriage Story, Paterson) and Marion Cotillard (Inception, Macbeth, La Vie en Rose), along with Simon Helberg (The Big Bang Theory) and Belgian singer-songwriter Angèle in her acting debut. The screenplay is written by Ron Mael and Russell Mael of Sparks, and the film also features songs from Sparks and music producer Marius de Vries (La La Land, Bohemian Rhapsody, Moulin Rouge).
Set in contemporary Los Angeles, Annette stars Henry (Adam Driver) as a stand-up comedian with a fierce sense of humor who falls in love with Ann (Marion Cotillard), a world-renowned opera singer. Under the spotlight, they form a passionate and glamorous couple. With the birth of their first child, Annette, a mysterious little girl with an exceptional destiny, their lives are turned upside down.
Annette will open this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but MUBI has already snapped up the rights to the movie, which it will release in cinemas on 3rd September. It follows the cinema release of Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow, which will soon be released to stream on MUBI from 9th July.
The 2021 Cannes Film Festival will run from 6th to 17th July.
Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard begin filming on Amazon’s Annette
13th October 2019
Filming is now underway on Amazon’s latest star-studded original film, Annette.
The movie, directed by Leos Carax, stars Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard. They play a stand-up comedian and a modern opera star, who become star-crossed lovers. They are joined by Florence Foster Jenkins’ Simon Helberg as a conductor.
The project, which has been in the works for years, marks the first English-language production from the Holy Motors director. The story originated from US rock band Sparks, which scripted the movie as well as composed original songs for it. La La Land’s Marius de Vries will be executive music producer on the movie, which will play out in song.
Charles Gillibert’s (Personal Shopper) CG Cinema, Driver and Paul-Dominique Vacharasinthu (The Jesus Rolls) of Tribus P Films are producing, with Amazon Studios distributing the picture in the USA. The UK doesn’t have a distributor in place yet.
Filming began this week, and will span Belgium, Germany and Los Angeles. The project has already made headlines, though, after Carax’s dog went missing on set and Driver recorded an appeal to find him on Instagram.
