Luca Guadagnino’s The Staggering Girl will be released on MUBI this February, and a new trailer gives us a first proper look at the short film.
The film, which is written by US playwright Michael Mitnick (The Current War) and debuted at Cannes Film Festival, stars Julianne Moore, Mia Goth (Suspiria), KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), Kyle MacLachlan, Marthe Keller (Marathon Man) and Alba Rohrwacher (Happy As Lazzaro). It tells the story of Francesca, an Italian-American writer (Julianne Moore) who lives in New York and must return to Rome to retrieve her ageing mother.
Oscar-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto provides the music for the film, and returning to collaborate once again with Guadagnino is acclaimed cinematographer of Call Me By Your Name and Suspiria, Sayombhu Mukdeeprom.
In another reunion, MUBI snapped up the rights to the film last summer, the second time it has acquired a Guadagnino joint after releasing his remake of Suspiria in the UK. The Staggering Girl will stream worldwide exclusively on MUBI (excluding Italy, China, Japan, and Russia) from 15th February. Milan Records will release Ryuichi Sakamoto’s score digitally on 14th February, with a vinyl edition to be released soon.
