ITV has renewed Red Eye for a second season.
The thriller, created by Peter A Dowling (Black and Blue, Flightplan), landed on ITV in April and followed DC Hana Li (Jing Lusi), who escorted a doctor (Richard Armitage) being renditioned on an overnight flight, after he was arrested for murder upon flying home from Beijing. As a conspiracy unfolds, DC Hana;s world collides with that of journalist Jess Li (Jemma Moore) and MI5’s Madeline Delaney (Lesley Sharp).
The six-part series dropped as box set on ITVX ahead of its linear debut, with 93 per cent of the viewers watching on-demand clicking into all six episodes within a week. With 29.3 million streams so far – and more than 8 million viewers through ITV – the show has become one of the broadcaster’s top 10 dramas of the year so far. It’s little surprise, then, that a second flight has now been given the green light for take-off.
Jing Lusi will return as DS Hana Li with a new conspiracy to solve, with Sharp and Moore also ser to reprise their roles.
ITV’s Head of Drama Polly Hill says: “I am so delighted to see the success of Red Eye. It’s incredible to get an audience of over 8 million and a huge thank you to everyone involved for making such a brilliant and addictive thriller. I can’t wait for audiences to see where Pete takes series 2. It’s another exciting ride!”
Executive Producers Julie Gardner and Lachlan MacKinnon added: “We’re thrilled to be embarking on another high-octane ride with Peter A Dowling, Polly Hill and her team at ITV. We’re beyond grateful to the audience who embraced all the twists and turns of series 1 with such enthusiasm. Expect more thrills and spills to follow.”
