It was checkmate for Netflix at the weekend, after it came out on top of this year’s Creative Arts Emmy awards, with The Queen’s Gambit leading the winners.
The period chess drama took home an impressive nine wins from the first round of the 2021 Emmys, including the prize for cinematography for a limited series, beating out competition from Amazon’s The Underground Railroad. In total, Netflix won 34 prizes across Saturday and Sunday’s awards ceremonies, even including the TV movie prize for Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square.
Netflix went into this year’s Emmys race with 129 nods in total, just behind HBO/HBO Max, which combined had 130 nods. From the initial round of prizes, HBO is trailing behind the streamer with 10 wins, with Disney+ emerging in second place, taking home 13 prizes – including seven wins for The Mandalorian, tied with NBC’s Saturday Night Live. The
Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots was a surprise success, taking home six prizes, just ahead of RuPaul’s Drag Race and The Crown, which took home four prizes apiece. Netflix’s Bo Burnham: Inside and David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet both took home three prizes, tying with Apple TV+ hit Ted Lasso, Pose and Marvel’s first Disney+ series, WandaVision – which notably took home both the production design prize and the award for original music and lyrics for the song Agatha All Along.
Apple TV+’s success wasn’t just driven by Ted Lasso, though, with Boys State named the best documentary, contributing to the fledgling streamer’s seven total wins – tied with NBC. Other notable prizes went to The Flight Attendant for original title theme music, The Good Lord Bird for opening titles and, still punching above its commercial success, Quibi’s Mapleworth Murders for Actor in a short-form comedy or drama series.
The Primetime Emmy awards will be announced on Sunday 19th September, with The Crown and The Mandalorian still favourites, going into this year’s Emmys race with 24 nods apiece.
