Spinning Out cancelled by Netflix
David Farnor | On 04, Feb 2020
Spinning Out has been cancelled by Netflix after one season.
The 10-episode series, created by Samantha Stratton (Mr. Mercedes), follows Kat Baker, an up-and-coming, high-level single skater who’s about to turn in her skates after a disastrous fall took her off the competition track. When Kat seizes an opportunity to continue her career as a pair skater with a talented bad-boy partner, Justin, she risks exposing a fiercely kept secret that could unravel her entire life.
Kaya Scodelario starred as Kat, replacing a once-attached Emma Roberts, with support from Willow Shields, Evan Roderick as Justin, two-time Olympian Johnny Weir and Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness. The show premiered on New Year’s Day, but failed to build up enough moment in the rink, with Netflix confirming a month later that it would not renew the show for a second run.
The decision marks Netflix’s ongoing strategy of evaluating its projects on viewing figures over the initial 28 days after a show’s release. It also marks the second of two freshman Netflix projects to be axed after just one season: Soundtrack, which also began at a traditional network (Fox, versus Spinning Out’s Pop), was also quietly cancelled this year.

Two-time Olympian Johnny Weir has joined the cast of Netflix’s new skating drama, Spinning Out.
The 10-episode series, which is created by Samantha Stratton (Mr. Mercedes), follows Kat Baker, an up-and-coming, high-level single skater who’s about to turn in her skates after a disastrous fall took her off the competition track. Kaya Scodelario stars as Kat, supported by Willow Shields as Serena and Evan Roderick as Justin. Now, the trio are getting Olympic-level backup from Weir. The sportsman turned NBC Correspondent and Food Network host will play Gabe, who seems like an easy-going guy but under his funny, laidback exterior is a cutthroat competitor who will stop at nothing to beat Kat and Justin.
Also joining the cast are Sarah Wright Olsen (American Made, Marry Me) as Mandy, Justin’s stepmother. Raised in rural Kentucky, Mandy started her own real estate business from scratch. She fell in love with Justin’s widower father when she sold him a house, and has helped raise his two younger sons.
Will Kemp (Reign, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce) has also been cast as Mitch, the charming, British ‘it coach’ in the region who has gotten scores of girls into high-level competitions. When he first signs on to be Serena’s coach, she’s sure she will finally best her sister.
Kaitlyn Leeb (Shadowhunters, Total Recall, Slasher) will play Leah, Gabe’s skating partner who is as mean as she is beautiful. When she’s replaced by Kat as Justin’s pair partner, she makes it her life’s mission to take the two of them down.
Amanda Zhou (October Faction, IT:Chapter Two) will play Jenn, Kat’s foul-mouthed best friend who doesn’t suffer fools. Jenn is an extremely talented single skater, the daughter of Chinese immigrants who own a successful local sporting goods store, and Serena’s main competition.
Mitchell Edwards (All American, The Fix, Roxanne Roxanne) has been confirmed as Marcus, son of a prominent African American family, and Kat’s co-worker at the lodge bar. Besides being a bartender, he is also a gifted skier who is trying to find his place in a predominantly white sport.
Kaya Scodelario replaces Emma Roberts in Netflix’s Spinning Out
14th December 2018
Kaya Scodelario has skated into the lead role on Spinning Out, Netflix’s new drama.
The edgy 10-episode series is created by Samantha Stratton (Mr. Mercedes), who serves as a showrunner with Lara Olsen (90210). It follows Kat Baker, an up-and-coming, high-level single skater who’s about to turn in her skates after a disastrous fall took her off the competition track. When Kat seizes an opportunity to continue her career as a pair skater with a talented bad-boy partner, she risks exposing a fiercely kept secret that could unravel her entire life. On and off the ice, Kat and her new partner will face daunting odds, injury to body and soul, financial sacrifice, and even potential mental breakdown on their way to realising their Olympic dream.
Emma Roberts was originally cast in the lead role in October, but then left the project due to a scheduling conflict. Now, Scodelario has stepped into Kat’s shoes.
Scodelario is perhaps most widely known in the US for her role in The Maze Runner film series, based on the popular novels by James Dashner, but needs no introduction to British audiences, after playing Effy in all four seasons of Skins. She has also impressed in such films as The Truth About Emanuel and Andrea Arnold’s Wuthering Heights.

Roberts comes to the lead role after starring in the eighth season of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Apocalypse on FX. She is no stranger to TV, though, skating rings around viewers as a staff writer on shows such as The Arrangement, Search Party, Agent X, State of Affairs, and Star-Crossed. The project marks a reunion for Olsen: the veteran showrunner acted as EP for Emmy-winning Free Rein on Netflix.
Tory Tunnell (Safehouse) and Joby Harold (Safehouse) are also EPs on the series.
Netflix has ordered 10 episodes.
