2022 Oscars: Where can I stream this year’s nominees?
James R | On 08, Feb 2022
The Power of the Dog is leading this year’s Oscar nominations, in a year where Netflix has dominated the awards line-up.
The streamer has racked up 27 Oscar nods this year, more than any other studio and up from 25 last year. The result is the third year in a row when Netflix has been the most nominated studio in the field, although it is yet to bag a Best Picture gong. This might be the year that changes, however, with Jane Campion’s Western up for 12 categories, including Best Picture and acting nods for Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee, plus Directing for Campion – the first woman to be nominated in the helmer category twice.
The film is followed closely by Dune, up for 10 prizes, including Best Picture, although it hasn’t nabbed any actor nods or a nomination for director Denis Villeneuve. West Side Story and Belfast are both up for seven prizes, just ahead of King Richard on six. All of these are nominated for Best Picture, joined by Apple TV+ drama CODA, surprise contender Drive My Car, Licorice Pizza and Nightmare Alley.
Netflix’s other prominent contenders include Don’t Look Up (up for four prizes, including Best Picture), The Lost Daughter (up for three prizes, including acting nods for Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley), the musical Tick, Tick… Boom! (up for two, including Actor for Andrew Garfield) and the animated comedy The Mitchells vs the Machines. Netflix’s Passing, however, was snubbed entirely.
Amazon, meanwhile, is placing its hopes in Being the Ricardos, which has a trio of acting nominations, for Javier Bardem, Nicole Kidman and JK Simmons, but no directing or Best Picture nods. It has also a make-up and hairstyling nod for comedy sequel Coming 2 America.
Apple TV+’s other contender, The Tragedy of Macbeth, is up for three prizes, including cinematography, production design and Best Actor for Denzel Washington. CODA’s nod for Best Picture, though, marks the fledgling streaming service’s first Best Picture nomination.
The giant mouse in the room, meanwhile, is Disney, which has 23 nominations to its name, including several for West Side Story and Nightmare Alley, as well as multiple films released either directly to Disney+ or as Premium Access titles alongside cinema releases, including Raya and the Last Dragon, Cruella, Luca and Summer of Soul.
The winners will be announced on 27th March. Until then, here’s the full list of nominees, plus where you can stream them in the UK:
