While the name Lupin might bring to mind a certain anime character, Netflix is preparing to bring Arsène Lupin back into fashion – and, judging by the series’ trailer, Omar Sy is the right guy to do it.
The actor, who won worldwide acclaim for his role in The Intouchables, has since appeared in Jurassic World and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Now, he’s heading to Netflix to take on the iconic figure from French literature.
Some books go way beyond a story, he tells us in the trailer, as he steps into the shoes of Assane Diop, a master of disguise and gentleman thief. Promising charm, spectacle but most of all a swaggering charisma, Sy’s smiling presence gives the slick teaser of the series a promising style.
The series premieres on Netflix in January 2021. Here’s the video:
Lupin is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
Omar Sy to play Lupin for French Netflix series
29th July 2018
Omar Sy has signed on to play Arsène Lupin in a new French series for Netflix.
The actor, who won worldwide acclaim for his role in The Intouchables, has since appeared in Jurassic World and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Now, he’s heading to Netflix to take on an iconic figure from French literature: the gentleman thief Lupin, a master of disguise.
Produced by Gaumont Television, the Deadline reports the show will be a “contemporary adaptation” of the novels by Maurice LeBlanc, whose first created the character way back in 1905. Since then, the books have been adapted multiple times for screens both big and small. Sy’s casting marks the first time a black actor has played the character.
“I am thrilled to play Arsène Lupin, such a charismatic character in a modern and unique adaptation,” he said in a statement. “Joining Netflix, a service who offers so many diverse and qualitative programmes that I have great joy to discover every time inspires me greatly.”
Gaumont Television’s Isabelle Degeorges will produce the programme, with a release planned for 2020.
