Walter Presents will premiere Eyewitness on Channel 4 this month.
The streaming service, which is dedicated to foreign-language TV from around the world, is a veritable hub for binge-watching. While box sets are Walter’s bread and butter, though, its latest will debut on good old-fashioned TV first, with Episode 1 of Eyewitness airing on Channel 4, before the whole box set is released online.
With a standout performance by International Emmy Award winning actress Anneke von der Lippe, the Norewegian crime thriller reverses the whodunnit logic to offer a refreshingly different, and compelling, web of psychological and moral complexity.
The show follows two teenaged boys, Philip and Henning (newcomers Axel Gehrken Boyum and Odin Waage), whose secret meeting at a remote sand quarry in the countryside is interrupted by a brutal multiple gang murder, which they both witness. While they manage to escape, the killer sees them. Haunted and hunted, they make a pact to never reveal what they’ve experienced. However, their secret, and the lies they tell to keep it, has repercussions for them and for their entire community. Further complicating matters, Local Chief of Police Helen Sikkeland (Anneke von der Lippe), who reluctantly heads up the murder investigation, is also Philip’s foster mother.
Originally entitled Ǿyevitne and produced by Norway’s NRK, the six-part series was written and directed by Jarl Emsell Larsen. It became an instant hit in Norway and throughout Scandinavia and has been remade for USA Network and HBO Europe.
Stay tunes for a premiere date on Channel 4, as soon as we get it – until then, check out what else is new and coming soon to Walter Presents.
