Who am I? You sure you want to know? In the case of Superhero Movie, no. No we don’t.
The opening words of Spider-Man now come from Rick Riker (Bell), as the wittily-titled Superhero Movie tries to spoof the now ubiquitous genre – and fails miserably. How far has Leslie Nielsen sunk since his Frank Drebin days? If you don’t want to see the result, look away. For 85 minutes and 52 seconds.
The plot, for want of a better word, is dire, at best. At worst, it’s non-existent. It follows Rick’s journey from boy to super-powered dragonfly, lurching from one franchise to the next, each time leaving a putrid little present on the doorstep. Remember Professor Xavier? Now he has a whole family of bald disabled people. And he’s banging Invisible Woman (Pamela Anderson). Flushing the whole thing down with toilet humour, the script plunders every depth imaginable. There’s even a Stephen Hawking look-a-like who swears. Repeatedly. What larks.
Superhero Movie is available to watch online on Amazon Prime Video as part of a Prime membership or a £5.99 monthly subscription.
