What’s leaving Netflix UK in October / November 2018?
David Farnor | On 15, Oct 2018
Those dark nights are about to get even darker this autumn, as the shining light that is Rick and Morty departs Netflix for good. But its not the only gem set to expire on the streaming service, as Ang Lee’s masterpiece Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon bids farewell, alongside peak Richard Curtis and early David Fincher.
This month is your last chance to stream the following:
Notting Hill – 16th October
Hugh Grant in scuba goggles. Julia Roberts in space. Rhys Ifans in grey Y fronts. This charming romantic comedy is Richard Curtis at his peak.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – 17th October
Ang Lee’s 2000 martial arts flick (about a thief stealing a treasured sword) is more tender character piece than breathtaking action, something that makes his introduction to the wuxia genre for western audiences all the more dazzling. An epic of whispered poetry, its wirework and nighttime sequences are unlike anything many had seen before, always using its stunts to further its characters, with each blow from veteran warriors Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) and Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) a gesture of unspoken emotion.
Panic Room – 20th October
David Fincher’s underrated home invasion thriller is worth watching just for the breakout turn from a young Kristen Stewart.
Nebraska – 14th November
“Has he got Alzheimer’s?” That’s a lady at a sweepstakes company to David (Will Forte). His elderly dad, Woody (Bruce Dern), receives junk mail from them saying he’s won a million dollars. He believes it. The only way he can claim his prize? Return the letter to Lincoln, Nebraska. So he sets off immediately. On foot. Down the highway. Alexander Payne’s comedy is a heartwarmingly cold study of the generational divide between people – and a touching account of one man’s slide into senility.
Steamboy – 15th November
England of the 1860s gets a technological makeover in this steampunk anime, which follows a young inventor who follows in his father’s footsteps. But after his grandfather sends him a mysterious, powerful ball, he finds his life turning upside down.
Rick and Morty: Season 1 to 3 – 17th November
Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon’s irreverent, dark, twisted, dark, hilarious, dark, disturbing, dark animated comedy follows the misadventures of an alcoholic scientist and his grandson – think Back to the Future, but with more time-travelling, universe-hopping portals, aliens and rude jokes.
