If you spend your days singing “London is the place for me” to yourself and eating marmalade sandwiches, then this summer will be a sad one, because it’s time for Amazon Prime Video subscribers to say goodbye to Paddington’s everyone’s favourite Ben Whishaw-voiced bear. He’s not the only one bidding farewell, though, as July and August also see the departure of Bridesmaids, Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka and Sean Penn’s Harvey Milk. None of those, however, wear a cute red hat.

Paddington – 22nd July

“Come to London and you’ll be sure of a warm welcome,” an explorer tells Paddington and his uncle and aunt in Darkest Peru. In an age where we’ve seen the rise of UKIP, this delightful adaptation of Michael Bond’s books is a lovely reminder that humans are capable of kindness and tolerance. The multi-cultural message extends right down to the film’s comedy, which combines physical slapstick with an onslaught of puns and musical gags. You’ll end up wanting to hug every person you meet.

Matchstick Men – 25th July

There are eccentric people. There are very eccentric people. Then there’s a con man played by Nic Cage in this winding drama that, impressively, is driven by character more than plot twists. Phobic, on drugs and faced with his estranged daughter, Nic puts in a great performance, supported by an on-form Sam Rockwell. Ridley Scott’s most underrated film.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory – 25th July

“Come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination…”

Mortal Kombat – 1st August

This dreadfully cheesy actioner does the smart thing many video games wouldn’t think of: forget the plot and just focus on the fighting.

Rush Hour – 1st August

Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan are on extremely likeable form in this comedy action flick about two odd-couple cops forced to work together.

Bridesmaids – 13th August

Intelligent, amusing and brilliantly performed, this hilarious wedding comedy stuffs character and heart in alongside the jokes. When it’s on form it’s unbeatable.

Milk – 31st July

Sean Penn stars in this biopic of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California.
