What’s leaving Netflix UK in May / June 2018?
David Farnor | On 15, May 2018
Here comes the sun, as living rooms across the UK drawn back the curtains to welcome in June. But while there’s fun to be had outside underneath those clear blue skies, the sun also spells danger – not just of sunburn, but also of being distracted from catching several gems before they depart Netflix UK.
From computing icons and bone-crunching action to an underrated slice of zombie horror (featuring a pre-Doctor Who Peter Capaldi as a Doctor in the World Health Organisation), this is your last chance to stream the following:
Steve Jobs – 20th May
Danny Boyle’s biopic of the computing genius offers a gripping, moving insight into the man behind Apple’s success.
John Wick – 20th May
“People keep asking if I’m back and I haven’t really had an answer. But now, yeah, I’m thinking I’m back!”
World War Z – 20th May
This Brad Pitt-starring zombie flick has become known for its uneven CGI and disjointed final act, but the movie’s adrenaline-fuelled rush for survival makes World War Z an underrated spectacle.
Cartel Land – 22nd May
This exposé of the Mexican drug war and the cartels that operate around the Mexico/US border is blisteringly good stuff.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens – 22nd May
“Chewie… we’re home.”
The Phantom – 26th May
Billy Zane – Billy Zane! – dons a purple lycra suit to bring this retro comic book icon to the screen. In this underrated 1990s adventure, The Phantom finds himself up against a master criminal, who’s trying to acquire a trio of mystical skulls with magical powers. A film in which our masked hero rides a horse through a waterfall to get to his secret base, this is silly, light-hearted, old-fashioned fun. Did we mention Billy Zane in purple lycra?
James and the Giant Peach – 30th May
This stop-motion take on Roald Dahl’s book captures the magical fantasy of a young boy escaping from his aunts (by travelling in a giant fuzzy fruit with a team of talking insects) with wit and magic.
Cruel Intentions – 30th May
Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon star in this definitive 90s erotic drama.
Chasing Ice – 31st May
Have you ever seen a glacier the size of Manhattan break off from land and collapse into the ocean? Jeff Orlowski’s Chasing Ice will show it to you. Hired by photographer James Balog to chronicle his efforts to capture global warming on film, the film is a provocative look at one man’s determination to change the world – and a stunning, shocking look at the tragic man-made destruction of our planet. The sequel Chasing Coral is equally powerful and also on Netflix.
Titanic – 31st May
“I’ll never let go, Jack…”
While We’re Young – 31st May
Just as Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories becomes Netflix’s second film to premiere at Cannes, the streaming service adds the director’s 2014 film. An entertainingly awkward tale of ageing and maturity, it sees Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts play a couple whose marriage has descended into stale routine – until they meet Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried), a hipster couple with energy to spare. The result is an astute study of the gulf that can open up between generations.
Elysium – 7th June
Matt Damon stars in Neill Blomkamp’s underrated sci-fi thriller, which wears its political heart on its shoulder.
Anomalisa – 10th June
Charlie Kaufman’s remarkable stop-motion oddity follows a motivational speaker who has a strange condition: everyone he hears sounds the same. So when he crosses paths with a woman at his hotel during a business trip whose voice is all her own, his existence is immediately shaken up. Eerie, intimate and awkwardly moving, this is sumptuous, profound stuff – if not exactly “romantic”.
Bone Tomahawk – 11th June
S. Craig Zaher’s violent treat follows a sheriff (Kurt Russell), his deputy (Richard Jenkins), a gunslinger (Matthew Fox), and a cowboy (Patrick Wilson) embark on a mission in the Old West to rescue three people from a savage group of cave dwellers.
Tale of Tales – 11th June
This dark trio of fairy tales is unabashedly bonkers and enchantingly unique.
Avengers Assemble – 14th June
“He’s crazy.” “He’s my brother!” “He just killed 83 innocent civilians.” “He’s adopted.” You could easily spend a review of Avengers Assemble just quoting endless lines of dialogue. The secret to the film’s success? Hiring geek king, comic nerd and filmmaker extraordinaire Joss Whedon to make a movie. And holy purple shorts, he assembles the heck out of it.
