Not getting your art-house fix from Netflix? Wish there were more indie films on Amazon Prime Video? Every week, we round up the new releases on MUBI, the subscription VOD service that hand-picks new and old classics from around the world.

Summer is all about two things: sport and music. If you don’t care about Euro 2016 and you’re not going to Glastonbury, MUBI has you covered with its own mini-music festival this week, featuring a line-up of artists that includes Talking Heads, Patti Smith and Pulp.

Here’s what’s new and coming soon to MUBI:

Mary Queen of Scots – 6th June

Mary was named Queen of Scotland when she was just six days old – a fact that put her instantly in the history books, not to mention her subsequent imprisonment at the hands of her cousin, Elizabeth Tudor. Charles Jarrot’s historical epic chronicles the whole story, with a cast that includes Glenda Jackson, Patrick McGoohan, Ian Holm, Timothy Dalton and, in the lead, Vanessa Redgrave.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind – 7th June

This overlooked and underrated 2002 movie is worth seeing for three reasons. 1. It’s written by Charlie Kaufman. 2. It stars Sam Rockwell as possibly-deluded game show host Chuck Barris, who says he was a CIA hit man in his spare time. 3. It’s George Clooney’s directorial debut.

The script was chopped and changed a bit, but Rockwell’s leading man charisma and Clooney’s striking set pieces, helped by surreal set designs and seamless editing, turn this offbeat thriller into a fascinating little gem.

The Club – 8th June

Pablo Larrain’s latest is a complex and challenging film that explores the sickness at the heart of an institution with remarkable clarity and intelligence. Essential and compelling viewing. (Read our full review.)

O Futebol – 9th June

As Euro 2016 kicks off, Sergio Oksman’s documentary sees him return to Brazil on the eve of the 2014 World Cup to watch the games with his father.

All the Real Girls – 10th June

The excellent David Gordon Green directs this indie romance about a young womaniser in a small Southern American town, who falls for his best friend’s younger sister – and must try to prove to everyone that this time, he is in love rather than in lust.

The Exquisite Corpus – 11th June

MUBI continues its partnership with Cannes’ Director’s Fortnight with the exclusive global premiere of The Exquisite Corpus.

Peter Tscherkassky’s short film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last year and went on to travel through New York, Toronto and Melbourne. A found footage work using various erotic films and advertising rushes, it plays on the “cadaver exquis” technique used by the Surrealists. Myriad fragments are melted into a single sensuous, humorous, gruesome, and ecstatic dream. (You can also see the film on the big screen at London’s ICA, where the film has its UK premiere at 4pm, including a Q&A with Tscherkassky and director Peter Strickland.)

The Aviator – 12th June

Martin Scorsese’s epic biopic of aviator Howard Hughes boasts a stellar turn from Leonardo DiCaprio – and an even better one from Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn.

Patti Smith: Dream of Life – 13th June

MUBI kicks off a mini-music festival with Steven Sebring’s Patti Smith: Dream of Life, an intimate portrait of the poet, painter, musician and singer. Winner of the prize for cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival.

Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest – 14th June

MUBI’s music fest continues with Michael Rapaport’s 2011 portrait of A Tribe Called Quest. Having forged a 20-year run as one of the most innovative and influential hip-hop bands of all time, the group has kept a generation hungry for more music since its famous break-up in 1998.

Stop Making Sense – 15th June

Jonathan Demme may be best known for The Manchurian Candidate and The Silence of the Lambs, but the director also turned his hand to the concert movie genre with this innovative film for rock group Talking Heads.

Pulp: A Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets – 16th June

Pulp found fame on the world stage in the 1990s with Common People. 25 years later, they returned to Sheffield for their last UK concert. Director Florian Habicht was with them, capturing their performance, as well as the band’s thoughts on fame, love, mortality… and car maintenance.

Europe, She Loves – 17th June

Festival darling Europe, She Loves examines the state of modern Europe, on the verge of social and economic change, through the everyday lives of four couples from Seville, Tallinn, Dublin and Thessaloniki. Just the ticket for those who need a break from watching George Osborne and Boris Johnson debating on the telly.
