“We’re surrounded by monsters.” That’s the sound of Lovecraft Country coming to the screen in a new HBO series – and while previous trailers have focused on the very real terror of racism in America, this new video gives us a first look at Cthulhu, the terrifying monster ripped from H.P. Lovecraft’s work.
The drama, featuring Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett, Wunmi Mosaku, Michael Kenneth Williams and Courtney B. Vance, is based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff. It follows Atticus Freeman as he joins his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father.
The series is created by Jordan Peele (Get Out) and J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), who exec-produce alongside showrunner Misha Green (Underground), director Daniel Sackheim (Game of Thrones and True Detective), Ben Stephenson and Bill Carraro. The 10-part drama arrives on Monday 17th August on Sky Atlantic, within 24 hours of its US debut. Episodes will air weekly at 9pm, but will also be simulcast at 2am – which means you can watch each week’s episode on-demand whenever you want from then onwards. Don’t have Sky? You can also stream it on NOW.
The trailer was unveiled alongside the show’s Comic-Con At Home panel last night, with the cast joining together for a virtual discussion about the programme. You can watch the panel below – or, for more on Comic-Con At Home, see our guide to the Comic-Con At Home panels to watch out for and catch up with.
