Indonesian fantasy series Halfworlds to premiere on Shudder UK

HBO Asia’s Halfworlds will premiere exclusively on Shudder in the UK this April.
AMC’s subscription VOD service, which is dedicated to horror from around the world, has snapped up the exclusive rights to the fantasy show.
The high-velocity programme, which spans eight half-hour episodes, blends magic and horror, Eastern spiritualism and Asian action, modern day thrills and ancient mythology. Created and conceptualised by rising genre filmmaker Joko Anwar, Halfworlds is set in present-day Jakarta, where a parallel world exists, full of bloodthirsty creatures who have lived among humans for centuries. They are the “Demit” and are carefully hidden by a powerful family of mortals.
But when a mysterious supernatural event, known simply as “The Gift”, occurs, the concealed world will be revealed. As the day of The Gift draws near, a street artist called Sarah finds herself caught between the two worlds: human and Demit. When the Demit find out who she really is, and what she must do, the balance between the two universes will be shaken forever.
With art and animation by comic artist Chris Lie (GI Joe) and shot in Batam and Jakarta, the show is a dark, slick journey into unknown territory. Indeed, Shudder’s acqusition marks the first time an Indonesian created and English speaking TV series will be available to watch in the UK. The deal follows the subscription service’s acquisition of another horror series from France, Beyond the Walls. You can read our review of that here.
Season 1 of Halfworlds will premiere on 6th April 2017. Seasno 2 will follow later in the year.
