Comic-Con at Home: 31 TV and movie highlights from Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ and more

San Diego Comic-Con will be going digital this July, bringing its range of panels, presentations and discussions from publishers, studios, and more to living rooms around the world. For the first time, the event will be free to all to watch live on YouTube and the SDCC website, with more than 350 panels spread out across five days, from 22nd to 26th July.
The panels will not be available to watch until their specified times and dates, and many of them will be available on-demand afterwards, although some may only be available for a limited period of time.
The line-up is being unveiled one day at a time, but already confirmed are a back-to-back bonanza of Star Trek panels, four panels for Amazon Originals The Boys, Upload, Truth Seekers and Utopia, panels for HBO’s His Dark Materials and Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest, as well as two panels from Shudder. Thursday 23rd July
Star Trek
Star Trek broke barriers when it first premiered more than 50 years ago, inspiring people of all walks of life by championing cultural diversity, scientific advancement and the exploration of new frontiers. Today, this legacy carries on through the Star Trek series on CBS All Access, where Starfleet and new characters alike take on exciting missions and explore uncharted areas of the universe, while keeping true to the ideals of Star Trek that society needs now more than ever. Join us as we virtually bring together the casts and producers from Star Trek: Discovery, new animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Picard.
Dominic Patten, Deadline’s senior editor, moderates the overall panels, which will feature the cast of Star Trek: Discovery reprising their roles in a virtual table read of the Season 2 finale, followed by a Q&A; Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty), creator and showrunner of Star Trek: Lower Decks, debuting a first look from the premiere episode alongside a cast discussion; and Patrick Stewart and cast of Star Trek: Picard reuniting post-finale to discuss Season 1.

Amazon: Truth Seekers
A new original supernatural horror comedy by Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead), Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz), James Serafinowicz (Sick Note) and Nat Saunders (Sick Note). Join as they discuss the making of the hilarious eight episode series about a team of part-time paranormal investigators, who team up to uncover and film ghost sightings across the UK, sharing their adventures on an online channel for all to see. Discussion and Q&A moderated by Empire Magazine’s Chris Hewitt.

Disney+: Marvel’s 616
“Marvel’s 616” explores how Marvel’s rich legacy of stories, characters and creators exist within the “world outside your window”. Each documentary, helmed by a unique filmmaker, explores the intersections of storytelling, pop culture and fandom within the Marvel Universe. Join directors Gillian Jacobs, Paul Scheer and executive producers Sarah Amos and Jason Sterman as they discuss the making of this Disney+ original anthology series with moderator Angélique Roché.

Amazon: Utopia
ABOUT: A twisted, eight-episode thriller about a group of young comic fans who discover the conspiracy in a graphic novel is real and embark on a high-stakes adventure to save humanity from the end of the world. His Dark Materials
Adapting Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy of the same name, which is considered a modern masterpiece of imaginative fiction, HBO/BBC’s His Dark Materials concluded its debut season in December. Join executive producers Jane Tranter and Jack Thorne, as well as cast members Dafne Keen (Lyra), Ruth Wilson (Mrs. Coulter), Ariyon Bakare (Lord Boreal), Amir Wilson (Will Parry), Andrew Scott (John Parry), and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Lee Scoresby) in a virtual panel discussion about the hit drama series which will be moderated by award-winning journalist Stacey Wilson Hunt.

Join creator, executive producer and director Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation) and stars Robbie Amell (Code 8), Andy Allo (Pitch Perfect 3), Kevin Bigley (Undone), Allegra Edwards (New Girl), and Zainab Johnson (American Koko) as they discuss how they brought this futuristic comedy to life, share behind-the-scenes details from season one, and tease what fans can expect in season two. The panel will be moderated by Engadget’s Cherlynn Low. Upload season one is a ten-episode, half-hour, sci-fi comedy that takes place in the near future, where people can be “Uploaded” into a virtual afterlife of their choice.

Amazon: The Boys
Join executive producer Eric Kripke, along with series stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capon, Karen Fukuhara and Aya Cash, with moderator Aisha Tyler, for a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming second season of The Boys. Executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will also make a special appearance. Based on The New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. The even more intense, more insane season two finds The Boys on the run from the law, hunted by the Supes, and desperately trying to regroup and fight back against Vought.

Shudder: Horror is Queer
Discover why horror cinema is (and always has been) queer with Sam Wineman (The Quiet Room), director of Shudder’s upcoming documentary on LGBTQ horror film history, and a panel of leading voices: Nay Bever (co-host, Attack of the Queerwolf podcast), Bryan Fuller (creator, Hannibal), Don Mancini (creator of the Child’s Play franchise), Lachlan Watson (actor, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and, serving as moderator, writer Jordan Crucchiola.

The Mandalorian and His Many Gadgets
Daniel J. Glenn (podcast producer), Dr. Michael Dennin (science expert: ancient aliens, Star Wars tech), and Ben Siepser (bio-engineer) of the podcast Fascinating Gadgets, Gizmos, and Gear-Based Technologies explore the science behind the various tools Mando uses to secure his bounties. From tracking fobs and jetpacks, to wrist rockets and flamethrowers, they will examine the most well-equipped bounty hunter in the galaxy.

Adventure Time: Distant Lands
Based on the animated series Adventure Time by show creator Pendleton Ward and executive producer Adam Muto, these four specials explore the unseen corners of the world with both familiar and exciting brand-new characters. Join moderator Michaela Dietz (“Amethyst” from Steven Universe), as she shares all of the ba-nay-nay details about the BMO special from Adam Muto (executive producer), Glory Curda (Y5), Olivia Olson (Marceline) and Niki Yang (BMO). Fear the Walking Dead
Fear the Walking Dead will present a panel for the series’ upcoming sixth season, premiering later this year. Moderated by Chris Hardwick, the panel will feature TWDU chief content officer Scott M. Gimple, showrunners and executive producers Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg, and cast members Lennie James, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Colman Domingo, Danay Garcia, Karen David, Jenna Elfman, and Rubén Blades. Season six of Fear the Walking Dead explores what has become of the unlikely family once united by a mission to help those in need.

The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead will make its 11th San Diego Comic-Con appearance with a panel spotlighting “A Certain Doom, ” which will air as a standalone episode later this year. Moderated by Chris Hardwick (Talking Dead), the panel will feature TWDU chief content officer Scott M. Gimple, showrunner and executive producer Angela Kang, executive producer Greg Nicotero, who directed the episode, and cast members Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Lauren Cohan, Josh McDermitt, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton, and Paola Lazaro.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond
Moderated by Chris Hardwick, the series’ panel will feature TWDU chief content officer Scott M. Gimple, showrunner and executive producer Matt Negrete and cast members Aliyah Royale, Alexa Mansour, Hal Cumpston, Nicholas Cantu, Nico Tortorella, Julia Ormond, and Joe Holt. The Walking Dead: World Beyond delves into a new mythology and story that follows the first generation raised in a surviving civilization of the post-apocalyptic world. I Am Not Okay with This – From the Page to the Screen!
Cartoonist Charles Forsman (I Am Not Okay With This, The End of the F***ing World), director Jonathan Entwistle (I Am Not Okay With This, The End of the F***ing World), and actor Wyatt Oleff (It, I Am Not Okay With This) trace the evolution of the critically-acclaimed Netflix series I Am Not Okay With This back to its beginnings as an original graphic novel.

Deep Blue Sea 3: The Panel!
New discoveries and dangerous predators emerge in the middle of the ocean in Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s highly anticipated feature film, Deep Blue Sea 3. The follow-up to the breakout success of Deep Blue Sea 2 (itself a sequel to the 1999 cult hit Deep Blue Sea), Deep Blue Sea 3 will be the hot topic of discussion between an esteemed group of panelists, including actors Tania Raymonde (Lost, Goliath), Nathaniel Buzolic (The Vampire Diaries, Hacksaw Ridge), Emerson Brooks (MacGyver), Bren Foster (The Last Ship), and Japanese star Reina Aoi, and director John Pogue (The Quiet Ones) and screenwriter Dirk Blackman (Outlander). Lovecraft Country

NOS4A2 returns to Comic-Con for its second season. NOS4A2’s second season picks up eight years after the events of season one. Vic McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings) remains more determined than ever to destroy Charlie Manx (Quinto). Charlie, having faced his own mortality, emerges desperate for revenge against Vic. This time, he sets his sights on the person who means most to Vic – her eight-year-old son Wayne. Comic-Con@Home: SDCC goes digital this July

Comic-Con is officially going online this July, with a five-day event that will be be free for all to stream at home.
The annual comics and pop culture convention has become a major landmark in the entertainment calendar, not only for comic book fans but also for movie studios increasingly investing in superhero and other genre titles, who have turned to SDCC as a platform for previews, trailers and panel Q&As. With the coronavirus pandemic still spreading the globe, the event organised have decided to take the show on the online road instead, combining aspects of the convention experience with the comforts of living room viewing.
Comic-Con@Home was first teased in early May but now, it’s officially confirmed to be taking place next month, running from 22nd July to 26th July.
The first details of how it will work have also been unveiled. Plans include an online Exhibit Hall complete with exhibitors offering promotions, specials and limited-edition products, along with panels and presentations about comics, gaming, TV, film, and a wide variety of topics from publishers, studios, and more. A Masquerade, gaming and other activities will also be available for fans to participates in from home.
In what may prove a game-changer for the way the event operates, with tiered passes and ticketed limits usually governing access, all aspects of Comic-Con@Home will be free, with no limits to how many can attend.
“For the first time in our 50-year history, we are happy to welcome virtually anyone from around the globe,” comments SDCC spokesperson David Glanzer. “Though stay-at-home conditions make this a very difficult time, we see this as an opportunity to spread some joy and strengthen our sense of community.”
It follows a raft of film festivals going online during the coronavirus lockdown, including Cheltenham, Sheffield Doc/Fest, Canada Now, Edinburgh, Glasgow Short Film Festival, the Human Rights Watch Film Festival and We Are One, a global film festival on YouTube that brought together, Cannes, Venice, Tribeca, London and more.
