What would you risk for five minutes of pure power? That’s the question at the heart of Netflix’s new sci-fi thriller starring Jamie Foxx.
On the streets of New Orleans, word begins to spread about a mysterious new pill that unlocks superpowers unique to each user. The catch: You don’t know what will happen until you take it. While some develop bulletproof skin, invisibility, and super strength, others exhibit a deadlier reaction. But when the pill escalates crime within the city to dangerous levels, a local cop teams with a teenage dealer and a former soldier to fight power with power – and risk taking the pill to track down and stop the group responsible for creating it.
Foxx is joined by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dominique Fishback in front of the camera, while behind the camera are directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. The film is written by Mattson Tomlin and produced by Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless.
The film premieres on Netflix on 14th August. Here’s the trailer:
The Deuce’s Dominique Fishback joins mysterious Netflix sci-fi
29th September 2018
Dominique Fishback has joined the cast of Netflix’s mysterious new sci-fi film.
The movie, which was snapped up by the streaming giant earlier this year, is very hush hush, starting out as a spec script from Mattson Tomli and with Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman attached to direct. What is known is that the project is promising enough to attract two major names: Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Now, they’ve got company, with Fishback cast as the female lead. It continues a busy run for the actor, who is currently starring on Season 2 of HBO’s The Deuce and can be seen in The Hate U Give, based on Angie Thomas’ novel, which just premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jamie Foxx to star in Joost/Schulman Netflix sci-fi joint
21st September 2018
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jamie Foxx are headed to Netflix for their next project, a secret sci-fi with a red hot script.
It first came to light last year, when a spec script from Mattson Tomlin sparked a lot of interest from studios. Netflix outbid fierce competition to nab the rights, with the exact price paid unknown. The plot was also kept strictly under wraps, with the only thing certain that Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman were attached to direct.
The pair are long-time collaborators, with a career that has spanned multiple genres, from Catfish and Paranormal to Nerve. Tomlin (Boy, A Deconstruction of Reality) originally titled the project Power, but the script now has no official title.
What we do know is that Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless’ Screen Arcade will produce the film as part of their first look deal with Netflix. Unkeless most recently produced the three-time Academy Award nominated film I, Tonya, starring Margot Robbie and Allison Janney and directed by Craig Gillespie. His film First Match, which he produced for Netflix, won the Audience Award at SXSW earlier this year. Newman is a veteran film and television writer/producer whose CV includes Children of Men, Zack Snyder’s reimagining of Dawn of The Dead, The Last Exorcism, and In Time. The deal represents a strengthening of Newman’s relationship with Netflix after having first brought them Hemlock Grove, the service’s second original program produced, and following that up with Narcos, which he conceived, packaged, and brought to the streaming service in 2014.
In front of the camera are two equally impressive names. Academy Award Winner Jamie Foxx is currently filming the courtroom drama Just Mercy opposite Michael B. Jordan and Brie Larson. Emmy Award Winner and Golden Globe nominee Joseph Gordon-Levitt can next be seen in the independent thriller 7500.
