Two more Game of Thrones animated series in the works

Two more Game of Thrones animated series are in the works at HBO, as George RR Martin’s fantasy universe continues to expand on the screen.
Earlier this year, word came out that an adult-leaning animated project was in early development for the cable giant, as it looks to find new ways to continue the franchise since the original fantasy epic, based on George RR Martin’s novels, concluded in 2019.
A prequel series is already currently in production, with a star cast including Matt Smith, Paddy Considine, Eve Best and Emma D’Arcy. That’s based on George RR Martin’s book Fire and Blood, but HBO isn’t stopping there: the author recently inking a five-year overall deal with the company that will see him develop programmes for both HBO and its streaming service HBO Max.
Now, reports have surfaced of what that deal will involve, with two animated shows apparently on the table, taking its total animated slate to three series. One is set in the Golden Empire of Yi Ti, in the continent of Essos, which is one of the oldest in Martin’s fantasy realm – and was briefly referred to in Game of Thrones.
Word on the other two is scarce, although THR reports that one live-action prequel that was under consideration – Flea Bottom, set in the King’s Landing slum – is no longer going ahead. In the game of Game of Thrones spin-offs, you win or you die – there is no middle ground.
