“You’re very popular.” “I just try to be myself.”

That’s the sound of two Popes colliding in Netflix’s The Two Popes.

Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce star in this intimate look at a historic turning point in the Catholic Church.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Fernando Meirelles, it follows a frustrated Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) as he requests permission to retire in 2012 from Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins). Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church.

The film will be released in select UK cinemas on 29th November. It will then be available to stream on Netflix worldwide from 20th December.

Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce are teaming up for Netflix’s new drama, The Two Popes, and a new trailer gives us a first look at the duo in action.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Fernando Meirelles, the film promises an intimate look at a
historic turning point in the Catholic Church.

Frustrated with the direction of the church, Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) requests permission to retire in 2012 from Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins). Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Behind Vatican walls, a struggle commences between both tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness, as these two very different men confront elements from their pasts in order to find common ground and forge a future for a billion followers around the world.

The film will premiere at Toronto International Film Festival and screen at London Film Festival, before being released in select UK cinemas on 29th November. It will then be available to stream on Netflix worldwide from 20th December. Here’s the trailer:
